Chapter 1: Getting to Know Go for the First Time
Until Wang Yuhui was 10 years old, I was a Chinese teacher in a remote suburban county, and Hui was raised by his father and grandmother. Hui's father, who had a son at the age of 36 (in 1976, both father and son belonged to the dragon) regarded him as a pearl in the palm of his hand and loved him. Every time I take Hui out to play, I either hold it or carry it on my back, and sometimes in order to let my son see higher and farther, I let my son ride on my shoulder, and the father and son have a very deep feeling.
Hui Hui's father said that he wanted to cultivate some personal hobbies for his son from an early age, so he took his son to the junior sports school to practice football, passed the children's film training, and learned singing techniques, but he did not stick to it for a long time. When Hui was ten years old, it was when Nie Weiping showed his might in the Sino-Japanese Go Tournament, and a go boom also sprung up in the land of China.
One day, the father saw that the newspaper carried an advertisement for the enrollment of the Beijing Children's Palace Go training class, so he signed up for his son. (Years later, my father often struggled with this move of that year, and when the road to Hui Go did not go smoothly, the father would have some self-blame, for fear of choosing the wrong path for his son.) He also asked his son if he would blame himself. When Hui has good grades, the father will be happy like a child, this is a later story).
After the one-month training period expired, Hui became quite interested in Go, and his father applied to Teacher Xing Yinda of the Children's Palace to let Hui learn Go for a long time (Teacher Xing was a well-known amateur Go master in the country, who was the official Go coach of the Children's Palace at that time), so Hui began his life path with Go at the end of 1986.
Before learning Go, Hui Hui was also a playful child, and he could play for hours when he played outdoors
At the end of 1986, Hui Hui began to study only half a day a day, and in the afternoon, he went to the Children's Palace in Jingshan to learn Go, at that time, in Teacher Xing's class, there were two children younger than Hui Xiaolong named Wang Xiaolong and Weng Yanping, who had been studying Go in the Children's Palace for about a year, and the level was obviously higher than Hui Hui's level, which was the key training object of Teacher Xing.
Hui went to the Children's Palace every day mainly to watch them play chess or listen to the teacher talk about other people's chess, and then to play chess to do problems. After learning this for a few months, Hui's interest in Go grew, and his progress was also very rapid (Teacher Xing's evaluation) gradually gained the attention of the teacher.
Although his father did not know anything about Go, he said that Go was an elegant activity, a treasure of Chinese culture, and at some point, his colleagues said to him: There are no bad children for children who play Go. Since then, Hui's father has strengthened his determination to let his son learn Go and is very supportive of Hui's learning of Go (of course, no one around us could have imagined that Hui would later become a professional chess player)
In early 1989, Hui Hui had already begun to take the train to race all over the country, passing by Nanjing Station and taking photos on the platform
At the beginning of 1987, there was a national junior competition in the Beijing Children's Palace, Hui had just learned chess, and he did not have the strength to participate in the competition, Weng Yanping could participate, Hui Hui was brought into the arena by her, and felt the atmosphere of the competition for the first time.
After returning home, Hui was very happy when he told this story, as if he could enter the arena to watch the game, there would be infinite glory, and Hui also said that he must participate in such a competition in the future. We are all happy that my son asked for progress. Since then, Dad has been busier, and whenever there are games in Beijing and there are activities to talk about chess, the father will ride on his old 28 car and take his son to learn as much as possible.
On a snowy night, his father took Hui Hui home from where he was learning chess, and Hui sat on the girder of his bicycle and fell asleep because he was too tired. Riding to the Beixin Bridge, suddenly passed a large pit covered with snow, the car was violently turned upside down, caught off guard, the girder of the bicycle was broken, Hui was also thrown out of the inertia two meters away, fortunately, the snow on the ground was thick, Hui was not injured, but the father was frightened, when he looked at it in the past, he found that Hui Hui was not awake. Really hanging, almost a broken place to Tie Hui to injured, the father did not sleep well all night after returning home, the more he thought about it, the more afraid he was, fortunately Hui Hui was blessed, such a dangerous thing never happened again.
Hui Hui's most frequent place to learn chess, in addition to the Children's Palace, is the chess club in Ditan Park. It was close to home, and there was an amateur wudan wang li teacher who had been teaching chess there for a long time, and Hui Hui felt that he taught very well, so he liked to listen to the lecture. Every time Hui listened attentively to the lecture, Dad was reading a book on the side. After class, the two grandfathers went home together, and the time when they first learned Go was the happiest day for Hui Hui and his father.
In order to let his son practice chess at home, his father bought two boxes of chess pieces (it was glass, Yunzi was too expensive) and made a chessboard. The chessboard is made of a plywood, on which nineteen straight lines are drawn horizontally and vertically, then painted with varnish, and wooden frames are nailed on the four sides. The finished chessboard was thin and empty, and the sound of the pieces falling on the chessboard was loud and loud, and this chessboard became Huihui's treasure, which accompanied him until he was eighteen.

Hui Hui's first setback came from a fight incident, which also gave him a clearer understanding of how much he liked Go.
There is a classmate who studied Go in the Children's Palace named Li Yue, and Hui Hui is very good, usually the two people always play chess together, play, good and one person.
One day, two people were playing chess, somehow there was a dispute, and then there was a fight, the school is strictly forbidden to fight, they made this trouble, got the most severe punishment, Teacher Xing announced that they were expelled from the school and could no longer participate in training.
This night, Hui Hui's father came to pick up Hui Hui, as soon as he saw Hui Hui's body full of dirty looks, he already knew a rough idea, back home, Dad asked Hui Hui, do you still want to continue to play chess, if you still want to play, go to Teacher Xing to admit your mistake.
Hui Hui is a very stubborn child, always stressing that he is not wrong, saying that he will not admit his mistakes. Later, Dad said again, then we don't want to go to the Children's Palace to learn chess again, Hui Hui does not speak, his face is red, he shakes his head vigorously, and later, he cried out with a wow, it was really a loud cry, and later, Dad had no way, he went to Find Teacher Xing to intercede, in fact, Teacher Xing also cherished Hui Hui's talent, not really wanted to expel Hui Hui, and then let Hui Hui come back.
After this fight, we know that Hui Hui really likes to play chess, but even so, we can't imagine that Hui Hui will really embark on the road of professional chess players later.
In the spring of 1987, when Hui was eleven years old, a student that Hui's father had taught, Mr. Tian, who worked in the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, said that their leader, a general, was going to play chess at a Master of Go, and asked Hui Hui to also go to watch the battle. After Hui went, he learned that this master was Xu Rongxin, who was famous at the time, and this was also the first time Hui had seen a professional chess player.
As a result, Hui began to go to Teacher Xu's house once a week to learn chess. Teacher Xu is not only highly skilled in Go, but also very polite and elegant, writing well, and will also treat people and prescribe medicines. Teacher Xu read a lot of books and is very knowledgeable. Hui Hui has a great influence on chess skills and personality, and we are very grateful to Teacher Xu Rongxin until now.
Hui Hui gradually grew older, often took the No. 13 bus to the Children's Palace to learn chess, every day when he returned home it was almost seven o'clock, at that time, Hui Hui's favorite cartoons were almost finished, and Hui could only listen to the ending song every time. At that time, all children loved to watch flower fairies, Smurfs and other cartoons he had not watched all.
Once Hui Hui was full of resentment and asked his father why I couldn't watch TV that everyone else could watch, it was too unfair. The father replied to the son: This is very fair, you give more than others today, which means that you will definitely get more than others in the future. Hui Hui nodded as if he understood, and never said the same complaining word again. I think that at that time, he may not be able to understand his father's words, but he will definitely remember these words and accompany him throughout his life.
The first time Hui Hui wanted to fight back was in the autumn of 87, once went to Teacher Xu's house to play chess, was let the sixth son also lose, Teacher Xu was very angry, and said to Hui Hui next time he lost again.
Hui returned home and was discouraged, at first he asked him anything he did not say, and later said that it was because of carelessness, reading the wrong simple dead or alive to lose chess, Teacher Xu said the above words to him, Hui Hui's confidence was very damaged, and he did not want to play chess again.
It took my dad and his dad a word of enlightenment and encouragement to pull him out of that mood. Of course, Teacher Xu did not really let Hui Hui come to the door.
HuiHui has many shortcomings, such as easy to be careless, poor psychological quality, etc., but there is also an advantage, that is, it is strong and does not accept defeat. After this small episode, it aroused his competitive spirit and deepened his interest in Go, so that he worked harder than before, and soon, Hui ushered in a leap in the level of Go, and by the spring of '88, Teacher Xu could only let him have three sons.
Chapter 2: Taking Risks for Dreams
In May 1988, the then newly established Coal Mining Sports Association Go team was training in Beijing (due to the dissolution of The Bayi Go Team that Mr. Xu was originally in, it had been transferred to the Coal Mining Sports Association Go Team) Teacher Xu introduced Hui Hui to play chess with the team members, and Hui Hui's first game of chess was with a little girl named Ma Xuekun (half a year younger than Hui Hui) And Hui hui was defeated, and he played a game with the leader of the Go team at the time, Mr. Kou Guangliang, and narrowly won. It may also be that the game was won, leaving a certain impression on the leader of the Go team.
Just at that time, the Go team of the Coal Mining Sports Association was expanding the team and recruiting potential children in the country to be trained, and Teacher Xu proposed to our parents that hui join the Go team and go to Henan to participate in professional training. (The training base of the coal mining team is in Pingdingshan City, Henan Province)
As soon as this suggestion was made to me and his dad, we were in a dilemma. It turned out that Hui Hui played Go, just to cultivate a specialty for him, add a hobby, never wanted to become a professional chess player, and then there was Hui just graduated from primary school, because his academic performance was also very good, he had been admitted to Dongzhimen Middle School (Beijing Key Middle School) to give up this hard-won student status, for me and Hui's father, it is not an easy decision to make.
Coupled with the fact that Hui grew up to be so old, never left his parents, and had almost no ability to live independently, this walk was so far that neither his father nor I was at ease. But Hui Hui really likes to play chess, and now he has such a good opportunity to improve his chess skills, if he just gives up, it is estimated that there will be no such opportunity again, and maybe Hui Hui will not have much achievement in Go in this life.
Thinking about it, Hui's father and I still consulted Hui himself, and he replied very simply that he wanted to play chess (many years later, talking about this past, Hui Hui said that in addition to the reason why he likes to play chess, there is another reason that is also very important, that is, he especially dislikes the atmosphere of the school, especially when he has to put his hands behind his back in class, which is simply unbearable, and when children make major decisions in life, they are completely different from what we adults think. Since he said so, we parents should also respect his choice.
In the end, it was decided to give Hui Hui two years, and during these two years, hui would be retained at Dongzhimen Middle School, and if he could not obtain a professional position, he would return to Beijing to study. Hui also agreed.
So in early June, after we formally replied to the leaders of the Go team, Hui Hui boarded a train to Henan in early July 1988 just after his 12th birthday, left his parents, and began his professional career of learning Go.
At that time, the Coal Mining Sports Association Go team was full of talents, and in addition to Teacher Xu, there were also Li Qinghai Seven Duan and Li Yachun Seven Duan (later Li Xing Liu Duan also joined, these teachers were very good to Hui Hui and played a key role in improving his chess skills) and several teammates of similar age, Wang Dongliang from Shanxi, Niu Ge from Henan, Hou Linhong, Shi Yajing, Wang Cheng, Ma Xuekun from Chongqing, and Jingshang from Tangshan who joined later. Most of them were at a higher level than Hui Hui at that time, but no one looked down on Hui Hui, and everyone also showed a heartfelt welcome for him to join.
After Hui Hui left Beijing, his first stop was to go to Zhengzhou to start a month-long joint training with the Henan Provincial Go team. This month is not a small test for Hui Hui in life.
Although Hui's father is very strict with his son in learning, he can be described as coddling in life. When he was in Beijing, Hui only liked to eat those few dishes, and nothing else, he was a typical picky eater, and he had not even washed a pair of socks. Simple housekeeping such as washing clothes and brushing shoes was simply unimaginable to him. Not to mention other self-care abilities. Ever since the day Hui left Beijing, we as parents have been worried about these things.
I was transferred back to downtown Beijing from the suburbs in 1984 to teach at the Lama Temple Primary School, and the whole family had just been together for a few years, and Hui Hui left again.
In the few months that my son had just left, I was sad to tear my heart and lungs apart, and I didn't have the heart to work when I thought of my son, and I couldn't keep my soul every day. His father was also like me, whenever he heard a child in the yard call Daddy, Hui's father couldn't help but look back. Seeing that it was not his son, Hui's father smiled at me bitterly and said: "Hey, I heard it wrong." Later, finally Hui's father couldn't help it, and after Hui Hui left for three weeks, his father took the train to Zhengzhou to see his son.
When I arrived in Zhengzhou, the father saw his son, the son's change was quite large, although he was still relatively thin, but his personality was cheerful, and he knew at a glance that this time was very fulfilling, and he was also very happy to learn.
But life made his father worry about his heart, Hui Xiao's face was dirty, his neck and ears were full of mud, and he didn't wash it well at first glance. The clothes he wears are also very dirty, he can't wash his own clothes, fortunately, several big sisters in the team are very enthusiastic, sometimes help him wash, but only occasionally help, and Hui Hui is not embarrassed to let the family help himself, so that after a week there will be almost no clean clothes to wear.
The way he came up with was to find a relatively clean dress in a pile of dirty clothes, and there was really no clothes to wear before he went to wash it himself, saying that it was washing, in fact, it was soaked in water for a while and then thrown twice before taking it out. Can it always be like this without being sloppy, and at first glance it looks like a street child. Dad was so sad that he washed his clothes for several hours on the first day.
But it is not all bad, and there is also a great progress in life, that is, due to the coddling of parents, eating is not so picky. Yes, there are so many meals in the canteen outside, if you are picky, you can only be hungry. At first, Hui didn't eat that or that, and he was really hungry for a few days. But after I was hungry, I ate everything. Moreover, there are strict rules in the team that no food is wasted, and all that is put into the bowl must be eaten, so that Hui's bad habit of picky eating will slowly change.
This is really a great thing, because Hui has also reached the time of growing up, if he has been around us in Beijing, he does not know when he will be able to get rid of this bad habit. I don't know if I can grow to 180 heads. Now, whenever we think about this, our whole family is also very happy thanks to the decision to let our son leave home early and live independently.
Hui in Zhengzhou after a month of training period expired, he went to the base of the Coal Mining Sports Association Go team - Pingdingshan Mayor stationed, in the first six months, although he still rarely can win chess, but the speed of progress is still very fast, slowly, he can sometimes win a game of female chess players, the teachers also expressed a certain degree of affirmation of Hui Hui's Go talent, several teachers said, Hui Cai learned chess for two years, there is the current level, it is still very rare, listening to the teacher's praise for Hui Hui, our whole family is very happy.
In the Spring Festival of 1989, it was the first time hui hui returned to Beijing on family leave after leaving home, and his father received a telegram from Pingdingshan about Hui Hui's ride at the unit, and rode the car fast all the way, in order to return home early and tell me and Hui Hui's sister about the good news.
At that time, our family had already moved to the vicinity of Anzhen Bridge (Hui Hui had not yet seen a new home when he moved in August 1988) and was far from the Beijing Railway Station. Hui's so-called train arrived at the station around twelve o'clock at night, and there was no bus home at that time, so my father and sister rode to the station to pick them up, and I waited at home.
After receiving the son, let the son sit in the back seat and then ride all the way home, it is really unfortunate, the father's tire on the road is still angry, and find a place to repair the car, wait until the downstairs of the house is almost two o'clock, at this time there is no elevator (the family lives on the sixteenth floor) Three people and then carry luggage upstairs to go home, and I have been waiting at home for a long time, do not know what is wrong, and can not sleep. For hours I kept my ears open and listened to the movement outside the door. When the three of them got home, my hanging heart was put back into my stomach.
That night, because of the return of our son, our whole family happily stayed up all night.
This family visit was only ten days, and in this short period of ten days, we all felt that our son had grown up, understood things, and improved his ability to take care of himself a lot. Although there are still doubts and worries about the prospects of his son taking the road of professional Go, from the time when my son left us and lived independently in the past six months, the advantages of letting him go out to exercise still outweigh the disadvantages.
In the summer of 1990, for Wang Yuhui was an important moment in his life, in this year's national promotion tournament held in Ningbo, he successfully set the stage with a score of 7 wins and 2 defeats, and officially became a professional chess player. Happy can't sleep at night, proud of his son.
At this time, it took only 3 and a half years for Hui Hui to contact Go, and even the teachers said that from enlightenment to fixed section, it only took such a short time, even in the country it was relatively top-notch (this record of time from learning chess to entering the section has not been broken so far).
Therefore, we held a family meeting in Beijing, and the result of the discussion was that since Hui Hui had also decided on a period and the teacher felt that he also had certain talents, we simply let Hui Hui take this road. Therefore, the next day, his father went to Dongzhimen Middle School to go through the formalities of renouncing his student status, and Hui officially embarked on the long road of professional chess players.
Although Hui was successful in fixing the section, he only took a small step on this difficult and long road, and more tests were still waiting for him. In 1991, hui held a national dan competition in Hangzhou to rise to the second stage, which really made us happy again. However, before the excitement passed, Hui returned to an important match a few days later, and the failure of this tournament also cast a thick shadow on his go path.
Chapter Three: Tough Days
The National Go Junior Team Selection Tournament held in the summer of 1991 was the first major setback in Hui Hui's Go career, but we never thought that the road that seemed to be smooth would be covered with thorns because of this setback.
At that time, if you could enter the national junior team, it meant that there were more opportunities to play, better training conditions, and even the opportunity to listen to the lectures of Nie Weiping, Ma Xiaochun and other big players, which were simply impossible for local teams to provide. The training conditions of local teams and national teams are simply very different.
It is precisely because of this that all the teenagers participating in the competition regard the annual audition as the most important competition, and they are ready to do so, and their sons are naturally no exception.
There are more than twenty teenagers competing with him, of which the main strong players are Wang Lei, Luo Xianhe, Zhou Heyang, etc. Although Hui Hui has made rapid progress, he is still at a disadvantage in terms of level due to learning chess too late (his opponents are similar in age to him, but generally they start to learn chess at the age of 5 or 6). But the son's recent results are good, his mental state is also very good, and he himself is still very confident about playing this game.
Hui is already fifteen years old this year, and this is the first and last time to participate in the audition (at that time, the age limit of the national junior selection was not more than fifteen years old, and every time we think about this, we regret that it was too late for our son to contact Go). If you can't make it to the top five, you will lose the opportunity to enter the national team through selection.
At that time, the system of graded points had not yet been implemented, and like the college entrance examination, the selection competition was almost the only chance to enter the national team. Losing this opportunity means that you may have to stay in the local team forever, which will be a very difficult thing for Hui Hui, who is bent on playing chess. He knew very well that this audition meant a lot to him. But it may also be because the importance is too clear. Hui was under tremendous psychological pressure before the game.
Hui Hui is a child with a heavy heart of victory and defeat, and may also be the reason why he has been training in Pingdingshan and has not seen the world much, and he is easily emotionally nervous before such an important game. I looked at Luo Xiehe Chang Hao and they seemed to be very relaxed. Yes, it is no wonder that they were all raised in the national captain, and they have experienced more such victories and losses. Of course, there is no nervousness.
In the face of huge pressure, the son failed to resist, the first set was lost to a child who was not strong, although he won two sets in a row, but then lost two consecutive games, in a total of seven rounds of competition, the early has lost hope, the final ranking is not ideal, even the top ten did not enter. Although the result of this competition is very disappointing, objectively speaking, Hui Hui has no advantage in strength, coupled with psychological reasons, and did not play at the best level. It is also reasonable that the final results are not satisfactory.
After the audition, Hui returned to the base of Pingdingshan to continue training, and when he lost this opportunity, he was even further away from the gate of the national team. In the period just after the game, my son was very depressed, and said some negative things to us: the competitors are in the national team, the conditions are so good, there are so many opportunities to play, it must be fast, I can't play them now, the gap will definitely be getting bigger and bigger in the future, and the more I think about it, the more I feel that the future is slim.
Hearing this, my heart is unspeakably uncomfortable. If it weren't for the fact that my son was playing chess, at today's age, he wouldn't have had so much distress and pressure. I really don't want Hui Hui to play chess anymore, save myself from this kind of suffering, and return to my side as soon as possible. For more than three years, I have been thinking about my son every day, and every time I have to meet, I can only stay around for a few days and then leave again. Even if Hui Hui does not play chess, it should be no problem to enter the university, and maybe it can still be a famous university.
As soon as I talked about my ideas and Hui Hui, I was strongly opposed by him, and at this time, his love for Go had gone deep into his bones, and nothing could separate him from Go. Coupled with this setback, he was tenacious and unwilling to accept defeat, and his son, who had passed the low period, vowed to me that he would be able to play chess well in the future, catch up with those strong players, and would certainly be able to give himself the opportunity to enter the national team. Hearing him say such ambitious words, the mother was really happy and worried. Alas, this may be his fate, as the saying goes, children and grandchildren have their own children and grandchildren, and his own path will be left to him to choose.
In the national dan competition held in Harbin in 1992, Hui rose to three dan again, and in the past three years, he has risen to three dan at a rate of one rise per year, which cannot but be said to be a good result, but due to overage and loss of the opportunity for selection, Hui is still far from the door of the national team. At that time, Hui Hui had very few opportunities to compete every year, except for the stage competition and the team competition, and striving to enter the national team was almost an unattainable dream for him.
In the next two years, my son's results have always been very good, and in the few competitions he can participate in, the winning rate is always very high. The speed of the promotion is still very fast, in the 1993 Beijing Seven Games, in the fourth place, Hui defeated several high-dan chess players, making his contribution to the coal mine sports team to achieve the ideal ranking. In 1994, it was upgraded to the fourth stage.
In 1993, the 7th National Games, Hui Hui performed well and made contributions to the Coal Sports Association. The only defeat of the champion Beijing team at that time was to lose to the Coal Sports Association, and Hui Hui defeated Tan Yanwu in the fourth unit
In the 1993 Seventh Games, Hui Hui also defeated the Henan team Wang Champion Baduan, and in 1988, when Hui Hui first arrived in Zhengzhou, Teacher Wang also gave Hui Hui a guide chess game for the four sons, and five years passed, hui Hui repaid the teacher's teaching grace with victory. After the end of the Seven Games, the Coal Sports Association held a celebration meeting, all the team members and leaders took a group photo, and the old man who held Wang Tan in the center was the chairman of the Coal Sports Association and the founder of the Go team, Mr. Gu Feng, in a sense, Chairman Gu Feng was also the person who changed Hui Hui's fate.
In 1995, in that year's Dan Tournament, Hui Hui achieved a good result of ten wins and two defeats, and also smoothly promoted to five dans, with the excellent results of six years and five dans, stepped into the ranks of high-dan chess players. At this time, he was already nineteen years old, and there was a saying in the ancient Go world: if you don't become a national player at twenty years old, you will have no hope for life. Does this also mean that if you don't enter the national team at the age of twenty, you will have no hope for life?
Although his son's strength has gradually been recognized by people in the Go community, due to institutional reasons, Hui still cannot enter the national team. Naturally, there was no opportunity to participate in various invitational tournaments and tournaments (at that time, the vast majority of competitions were only eligible for chess players in the national team, and only a small number of places were given to chess players from local teams, and generally above the seventh dan level). ）
For a chess player of his age, the chance to play is more important than anything else. At this time, although Hui Hui already had a certain strength (otherwise he would not have had these current achievements), the saddest and most difficult thing to accept was that he had almost no chance to prove himself. When my son first left Beijing, I once said to him that opportunity favors those who are prepared. He had always kept this sentence in mind, and when he was depressed, he once asked me: When will the opportunity come to me, is it that I am not ready, but I have worked very hard, is it true that I will not have the opportunity to prove myself again? Whenever I heard my son's mood on the phone, it was the most uncomfortable time for me and his father.
Yes, we also don't understand why my son's grades are better than most of his peers, but he has no chance to enter the national team, is it really a test of heaven. Hui Hui's father and I are ordinary teachers, there is no social relationship, I am really anxious about my son's affairs and can't help a little, in addition to instructing my son to continue to work hard, I can only pray every day that good luck will come to Hui Hui's body as soon as possible.
