Today, I finished reading Lin Wenyue's translation of "The Tale of Genji". I still have a little opinion on the translation. Like the comments of netizens, the main places where there are opinions are the translation methods of Waga. I began to think that I could accept the three-sentence japanese song translation that went around, but when I saw it, I found that it was not good at all, and it was indeed aesthetically tired and slightly strange. In this regard, I heard that Feng Zikai's translation will do a lot better, and I am ready to buy it and take a look.
In terms of language atmosphere, the advantage of Lin Wenyue's translation is that it is indeed very beautiful, classical, and overflowing with a timely sad atmosphere. This should be where Lin Wenyue's translation is superior to other translations. In addition, Lin Wenyue's version of the short sentences and songs is very much, I feel that she quoted all the places where ancient songs can be quoted, so it seems very original.
The translations of Ye Weiqu and Tang Yuemei that I had seen before personally felt better than the simple text, not strange, but the classical atmosphere of the words and sentences was not as good as Lin Wenyue. The accuracy is no longer remembered, after all, I don't know ancient Japanese, but the impression is that the Ye Tang translation quotes ancient songs in the sentences in obviously less places than Lin Wenyue.
At the end of the reading, the most important thing to know is whether the Uji Ten Posts have not been written. Finally, when it is written that the floating boat refuses to meet with Kaoru, it suddenly stops, and it always feels that it is not finished. Finally, did they meet, whether the palace was involved again, whether the floating boat was still vulgar, and all kinds of entanglements were not explained, and the whole book was directly completed. There are people in China who continue to write the Dream of the Red Chamber, and there should be people in Japan who continue to write the Ten Theses of Uji, right? Later, I want to check the information to see the japanese academic circles' comments on Uji's ten posts, and whether they have been written. That's probably what I want to do most right now.
Then I want to lament the fate of the women in the book. After all, after a thousand years apart, it is certainly inappropriate to judge the moral acts of the past with the eyes of modern people. However, I still can't help but feel that such as the Maharaja and the Floating Boat are really passive and awkward to the extreme, far less assertive than the various women in the Genji period, and the perception of a generation is inferior to a generation. Lady Purple, Lady Akashi, Hanazari and others, although they were not comrades in different backgrounds, each had their own troubles, but they had their own distinct philosophy of life. YunjuYan, who returned to her mother's house angrily after her husband remarried, and the empty cicada who rejected Genji from beginning to end were tough outliers among women of that era. Even the last flower picking and the like have the perseverance to stick to the ancestral house, not the swaying wall grass that follows the clouds. On the other hand, the floating boat, the fate is so clear in front of her, but she repeatedly falls into the fog, until the end is still swinging. However, if you think about it carefully, perhaps the floating boat was the common fate of that era, and the other women had to meet the light source clan and the barely flowery Yu Wu. It reads angry, sympathetic and powerless, in short, it is tragic to be born as a woman in the Heian period.
In terms of aesthetic taste, this book is indeed a must. The various banquets and residences of the nobles in the Heian period were narrated by a pen of the Purple Style Department, which was extremely detailed. Letters and song etiquette, seasonally updated dress, moonlit piano, dancing with songs, ancient painting collection competitions, four seasons gardening, Buddhist ceremonies, etc., are simply all-encompassing, and it is very picturesque to read.
Just imagining the streets of Kyoto and the elegant courtyards decorated with seasonal plants is already an aesthetic pleasure. Then think of the handsome characters inside and the various rhymes that happened to them, the boy who wears a hunting suit to avoid the eyes of the moon and the girl whose hair hangs down like a waterfall. Mixed with the ox cart in the early morning clicking away, the girl flowers and morning glory flowers blooming at the feet, the mist shrouded in the autumn leaves of the mountains, the white waves of the Uji River and so on, it is indeed an extreme romantic enjoyment, and the mood when reading seems to become refreshing.
And the sense of impermanence that hangs over everyone's head greatly adds a sad emotion to such aesthetic tastes. Birth, old age, illness and death, promotion and left migration, feelings, as if they are not under the control of people, most people have spent their lives in the flow, even if the Light Source Clan of the Extremely Human Subjects is powerless to resist the huge sense of impermanence when fate takes away Lady Purple. So most of the people in the book are longing for renunciation in the end, as if practice is the final destination. From the Emperor's Empress, Genji, and the Three Princesses, down to the old man of Akashi, the floating boat, the jade beard, and even the elderly among the commoners, all of them regard the practice of Buddhism as the place of life. Because of impermanence in the end, you will feel that the world is boring to this point.
From time to time in the process of reading, there will be such an experience: sometimes I will listen to guqin albums and read this book at the dinner table, if it is rainy weather, I feel that the breath cannot come up, and a sad atmosphere is unbearable. At this time, you have to put down the book, go to the downstairs garden to take a walk, watch the children play in the garden, or watch the American drama brush for a while to adjust it. It can be seen that the writing skills of the Purple Style Department are really very profound, and the inner turbulence is extremely deep, and it can also be seen that mortals like me still need the happiness of the world to get by.
