The story describes four generations of emperors, spanning more than 70 years, involving more than 400 people, of whom 20 or 30 people have distinct impressions. The characters are mainly upper-level nobles, but there are also middle- and lower-class nobles, palace women, maids and commoners.

The book is centered on the Genji family, and the first two parts describe the various or miserable or beautiful love lives of the Light Source clan and the women;

The third part, with Kaoru, the son of the Hikari clan, as the protagonist, lays out a complex and complicated love entanglement between men and women.

"Genji" is the surname of the male protagonist in the first half of the novel, and "Monogatari" means "narration", which is a genre in Japanese classical literature, similar to the "legend" of China's Tang Dynasty.

The more famous ones are "Taketori Monogatari", "The Tale of The Rocks", "The Tale of The Heike", "The Tale of Ise", etc. The story of Hui Ye Hime in "The Tale of Taketori" is well known to women and children in Japan.
