Guo Yong: The first female captain of the Chinese medical team to aid Sudan

"China sent its first assistance medical team to Sudan in 1971, I was born in 1971, I think this is fate, and my sense of mission in my heart prompted me to participate in this assistance." Guo Yong, deputy director of the Human Resources Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, took the initiative to apply and became the leader of the 34th batch of Medical Teams in China to aid Sudan. Guo Yong is also the only female captain of the Chinese medical team to aid Sudan since 1971.

Memorize, take notes, and ask each other questions To conquer the first level of language

When she first received the news of becoming the leader of the medical team to aid Sudan, Guo Yong had a hint of joy and excitement in her heart, but she felt more responsible. Guo Yong knows very well that leading Chinese doctors to assist Sudan is not only medical assistance, but also the continuation of Sino-Soviet friendship, and she represents not only the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, but China.

In November 2017, Guo Yong and the Shaanxi Provincial Health Commission began to select and organize teams, and the 34th batch of Chinese medical teams to aid Sudan drew 42 members from different hospitals in the province.

After the team was formed, from April to August 2018, Guo Yong and the team members entered Xi'an Foreign Chinese University for intensive training in English and Arabic. The first thing Guo Yong had to pass with the team members was the "language pass".

Memorizing, taking notes, asking each other questions, it was like they were back on campus again, seriously doing "preparation" study. Guo Yong said that everyone has a foundation in English, but Arabic, which is a completely new language for them, is really difficult. "In order to be quickly catchy, we use Hanyu Pinyin to mark and memorize common phrases sentence by sentence."

After mastering a certain language, on October 21, 2018, Guo Yong led all the team members to Sudan to officially start his foreign aid career.

Respond to emergencies Start a roll call system and a midnight round system

Arriving in Sudan, Guo Yong felt only one word - "poor". It is precisely because of this that the Sudanese people lack basic medical knowledge, so small diseases are dragged into major diseases, and minor diseases are dragged into serious diseases from time to time. The hospital equipment is old and unusable due to lack of management, which is also a major problem facing Chinese doctors.

In Guo Yong's view, as long as he is willing to think of a way, there are always more ways than difficulties. However, in early December 2018, China's 34th batch of medical teams to aid Sudan encountered social unrest in Sudan, and people took to the streets to demonstrate. What Guo Yong should consider, in addition to the normal medical work of the 42 team members, is more important for their personal safety.

Suddenly, with years of management experience, Guo Yong calmly formulated and launched the roll call system and the midnight round system, in her words, to let all team members always feel the care of the organization, some people to remember, some people to care, some to accompany. When there was social unrest in Sudan and the strike at the local hospital, the team committee responsible for security tried to contact the local security guards, the male team members consciously formed a self-defense team, the female team members took the initiative to do logistical support, and the team members helped each other to ensure the safety of the team, and successfully completed the assistance work until the middle of August 2019. Afterwards, Guo Yong said, "Give us another period of time, and the tunnels can be dug out." ”

Considering the harsh living environment in Sudan, poor sanitary conditions, and the high incidence of malaria and other tropical infectious diseases, in order to ensure the health of the team members, during the Sudanese assistance period, Guo Yong insisted on counting the number of people every morning and lunch, urging each team member to eat on time, designating special personnel to maintain the doors and windows of the house intact, cleaning up the water in the station, regularly distributing anti-mosquito and insecticide supplies, and effectively cutting off the transmission route of infectious diseases. During the assistance period, none of the 42 team members had malaria or other infectious diseases, and the team members were full of energy and full attendance.

Help the Sudanese people to do a little more, a little more

In the medical work of aiding Sudan, because the team members come from various medical units in Shaanxi, each has their own living and working habits. Before leaving, Guo Yong and his teammates discussed and formulated a series of rules and regulations related to the safety, going out, use of vehicles, personnel management and other aspects of the team, and after arriving in Sudan, they were continuously revised according to the actual situation, and a joint meeting system of the team committee branch committee was established, and a weekly meeting was arranged to discuss and decide on the affairs of the team, so that the situation in the team was well known and major matters were collectively decided.

In order to better integrate everyone into the new working environment, Guo Yong has carried out refined management of the affairs of the team, implemented the responsibility to the people, regularly inspected, and found problems to discuss and improve with the team members in time; as far as possible, let the team members participate in the team management and integrate into the life of the team, for this reason, she fully listens to everyone's suggestions and mobilizes the enthusiasm and initiative of the team members at any time.

A patient urgently needs craniotomy, but the local operating room conditions are very simple, the disinfection measures are backward, there are often flies in and out of the operating room, and most of the neurosurgery is the most sterile grade A surgery, once the infection occurs, often abandoned, and even directly lead to death. Teammates suggested cautious surgery, and the two young neurosurgeons on the team almost had to "back off", but Guo Yong believed that the safety of patients should be put first, and the enthusiasm of doctors should be protected.

As a result, Guo Yong and two doctors listed the problems, solved them one by one, communicated with the local hospital many times, improved the operating room conditions within the scope of their acceptance, established an intensive care unit, and the two doctors strictly screened patients, and finally successfully completed the first craniotomy in Sudan in recent years in March 2019.

This has further stimulated the enthusiasm of doctors, who have carried out a series of surgeries, the first microsurgery technology training, neuroendoscopic technology training, these trainings have changed the local doctors' understanding of the way of surgical approach.

Guo Yong always remembers the mission of the Chinese medical team, and she wants to lead the team members to help the Sudanese people do a little more, do a little more. At the beginning of December 2018, at the suggestion of Guo Yong and ophthalmologists, it was decided to hold a "cataract restoration project" to provide free surgery for poor local cataract patients.

With the strong support of the Chinese Embassy in the Soviet Union and the Shaanxi Provincial Health Commission, they negotiated with the three aided hospitals and finally reached an agreement, with the medical team providing the drugs and consumables needed during the operation, the team's ophthalmologists, surgeons, ultrasound doctors, and nursing staff jointly forming a surgical team to carry out the operation, and the three aided hospitals provided preoperative examinations, and carried out free cataract surgery for one week at the three medical points of Ntuman, Abu Osher and Damazin.

On September 15, 2019, the "Cataract Restoration Project" of China's 34th batch of medical teams aiding Sudan was launched. In order to benefit as many local people as possible in a limited time, the surgical team worked day and night, especially in Abu Osher Hospital, where the number of patients was extremely large, and ophthalmologists treated a large number of outpatients in the morning, and could not enter the operating room until 12 noon, continuing to work until late at night, completing up to 20 surgeries a day. In the end, the project provided 159 poor cataract patients in Sudan with free surgical treatment to help them see the light again.

Under the leadership of Guo Yong, the 42 members of the team have received 71,051 patients, treated 1,879 inpatients, and completed 4,235 surgeries in the past year. A total of 156 routine diagnosis and treatment services were provided to the Chinese in Suzhou, 4 people were rescued from critical and critical diseases, and more than 20 people were examined. The team published a total of 57 academic papers, participated in the application for 4 provincial, ministerial and national scientific research projects, and promoted 5 chief physicians and 4 deputy chief physicians.

In the year of aiding Sudan, Guo Yong has hardly slept a solid sleep, she said, as the captain, the safety of each team member is her responsibility, she wants to ensure their safety, do more meticulous and thoughtful. "Every member of the medical team is aware of the mission and responsibility they have undertaken, and has established a good image of China's white-clad angels and a good style of The Chinese medical team."
