Today (October 22nd), after nearly a year of preparation, sponsored by Suzhou Public Cultural Center and Wu Zuoren International Art Foundation, and undertaken by Wu Zuoren Art Museum, "But Add Color to rivers and mountains" - the 1961 Wu Zuoren Northeast Travel Sketching Research Exhibition was grandly launched in Suzhou Wu Zuoren Art Museum.
The frontier is strange all over the mountains, and the wind and wild frost are more virtuous.
But to add color to the rivers and mountains, there is no dispute over the hundreds of flower names.
This is a poem improvised by Wu Zuoren on a painting depicting northeast mountain flowers by his wife Xiao Shufang. In recent years, wu zuoren art museum has held a number of research special exhibitions with the theme of "but adding color to the rivers and mountains" and together with the Wu Zuoren International Art Foundation. The "1961 Wu Zuoren Northeast Travel Sketching Research Exhibition" is the third season of the series of research exhibitions "But Add Color to the Rivers and Mountains" after the "Foziling Reservoir Research Exhibition" and the "Yellow River Sanmenxia Research Exhibition". The exhibition fully presents the artistic achievements of Mr. Wu Zuoren's 1961 northeast travel sketching, and reveals the successful practice and direction of Mr. Wu Zuoren's dedication to the exploration of "Chinese style" oil painting.
The exhibition exhibits 48 works of art in the form of Wu Zuoren's oil paintings, Chinese paintings, sketches and 1 Chinese painting by Xiao Shufang, as well as nearly 30 documents including some old newspapers, old books and periodicals, old photos and so on. The exhibition comprehensively presents the experience and artistic creation results of Wu Zuoren's sketching trip to northeast China in the summer of 1961.

"Travel sketching" is a good way for artists to understand society, go deep into life, and flexibly and vividly create art. As early as the 1940s, Wu Zuoren made two "western" trips with a cumulative time of nearly 1 and a half years, and these two "western trips" were not only Wu Zuoren's comprehensive investigation of the social style and humanistic customs of China's northwest region at that time, but also a precious "sketching" trip in his artistic life. After the founding of New China, Wu Zuoren went south to the north, and almost every year he would go to the front line of life and production and labor to collect style sketches, so he also obtained a bumper harvest in artistic creation, especially in oil painting creation, and many classic works reflecting the main theme of the times were born in this period, such as "Foziling Reservoir", "Yellow River Sanmenxia", "Jingpo Flying Waterfall" and so on.
Ding Jianzhong, deputy director of Wu Zuoren Art Museum, said that for Wu Zuoren, the significance of this "travel sketch" is not only to enable him to "understand life in life and understand nature in nature", so as to accumulate rich creative materials and harvest fruitful artistic creation results; more importantly, in the face of new life, new style and new achievements in the new era, Mr. Wu Zuoren has made successful explorations in the expression of the ontological language of oil painting art creation, in order to form a contemporary era. The Chinese oil painting art of the "Chinese School" and the "Chinese School" has opened up the way, and the positive efforts with exemplary significance have provided a solid carrier and way of artistic practice. His successful experience and artistic achievements in these artistic practices have not only built a mature path for his own artistic creation, but also made a great historical contribution to the development of contemporary Chinese oil painting.
Background of "Trip to the Northeast"
In 1961, the China Artists Association arranged for multiple artists to go to various parts of the motherland to carry out "travel sketching". This team composed of Wu Zuoren, Xiao Shufang, Yu Feng and others was one of the many "travel sketching groups" in that year. In the summer of 1961, they came to the beautiful and rich Northeast to sketch and collect style. The itinerary mainly includes Harbin, Yichun, Mudanjiang, Changchun, yanbian, due to the flood during the new Aomori Industrial Bureau and stayed for a month, so the entire "travel sketching" time is relatively long, lasting two months, but also got more artistic sketching opportunities, harvested fruitful artistic creation results.
