Wu Zuoren (1908-1997), a native of Jing County, Anhui Province, was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, entered the Department of Architecture of Suzhou Industrial College in 1926, and from 1927 to early 1930, he studied at Shanghai University of the Arts, the Fine Arts Department of Nanguo Art College and the Art Department of Nanjing Central University, where he studied under Mr. Xu Beihong and participated in the Southern Reform Movement. He was appointed Professor and Provost of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1950, Vice President in 1955, Dean in 1958, and Honorary Dean in 1979. He was elected as the executive director and vice chairman of the China Artists Association. In 1979, he was elected vice chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and in 1985, he was elected chairman of the China Artists Association. He was consecutively elected as a deputy to the First to Sixth National People's Congress. In 1984, he was awarded the "Highest Medal of The Arts and Letters" by the Ministry of Culture of the French government, and in 1985 he was awarded the Order of Honor of the King of Belgium. He is good at oil painting and Chinese painting. He died on April 9, 1997. In his early years, Wu Zuoren studied drawing and oil painting, and his skills were profound; intercropping Chinese paintings were full of interest in life and did not fall into the traditional trap. In his later years, he specialized in Chinese painting, with a broad realm and far-reaching meaning, and integrated the profound achievements of Chinese and Western art with a condensed and accurate image. He is deeply accomplished in drawing, oil painting, and art education, and he is even more unique in the creation of Chinese painting.
