This happened in the first month of the sixth year of Tongzhi (1867), when Li Hongzhang, in order to suppress the East Road Twister Army, agreed with Zeng Guoquan (the ninth brother of Zeng Guofan) to adopt a strategy of dividing up and attacking together, that is, to let Liu Mingchuan of the Huai Army lead the "Ming Army" to the west, while Zeng Guoquan sent Bao Chao to lead the "Thunder Army" to the east to form a two-way attack on the East Road Twister Army along the Yinlong River.

Later, Bao Chao became depressed and returned to his hometown to recuperate, and has been devastated ever since. This incident caused strong dissatisfaction with Liu Mingchuan among the generals of the Xiang Army, including Zeng Guofan, and Liu Mingchuan's direct superior Li Hongzhang was also very passive, and he had to come forward to play the imperial court to ask for merit for Bao Chao.
Although things were finally settled later, Liu Mingchuan's behavior of repaying morality with resentment made most people, including colleagues and old friends, feel that this matter was done too much.
