Paris, June 1 (China News Service) -- Matthias Koeman was officially inaugurated as secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France, on June 1. Angel Guria stepped down as Secretary-General.

The OECD Secretary-General's handover ceremony was held on the same day at OECD headquarters in Paris. Guria, 71, gave a brief review of his 15 years as OECD Secretary-General. French Foreign Minister Le Dreyon attended the ceremony and delivered a speech on behalf of the host country of OECD headquarters.

Guria then handed over the key symbolizing the powers of the Secretary-General to Koeman, who formally assumed the 6th OECD Secretary-General. Koeman's term begins on June 1, 2021, for a period of five years.

Coman said his priorities as the new secretary-general are: to help maximize economic recovery in the post-pandemic era; to play a leading role in driving and facilitating effective action on climate change; and to identify ways to collect taxes on digital services to better manage the risks of the digital economy. In a statement issued on the same day, he also said that he would strengthen OECD engagement in the Asia-Pacific region.

Born in Belgium, Coman, 50, moved to Australia and worked in Australian politics, where he served as Treasurer. He supported the opening of markets and the introduction of free trade.

The predecessor of the OECD was the European Economic Cooperation Organization, founded in 1948, and with the addition of non-European countries, the organization was renamed the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in 1961, with 38 member states.

The OECD has long been committed to international development policy research and coordination and has played an important role in international economic cooperation. In recent years, China and OECD have conducted diverse and mutually beneficial exchanges and cooperation. (End)
