In 1978, when the archaeological excavation of the tomb of Zeng Houyi in Suixian County, Hubei Province, was excavated along with the world-famous Zenghou Yi chimes, there was also a set of Zenghou Yi chimes. It also has a history of more than 2,400 years. The chime is a percussion instrument in ancient China. It is woven from a stone chime and suspended on a shelf to play melodies. Often paired with chimes, the ensemble "The Sound of The Golden Stone".
Among the existing archaeological discoveries, Zeng Houyi's woven chime is the largest scale, the highest production process, the musical performance is also the best and most perfect, and there are exquisite chimes, and it can also be seen that the arrangement method is unprecedented. The bronze staggered gold chime frame consists of a pair of round carved monsters and the columns inserted on their heads, and two round rods as beams, forming a single-sided and double-layer structure. The column attached to the top of the beast is joined to the beam from the waist and the top. The bottom of the beam is equally spaced welded with cast copper rings, and the chime is hung with a string hook. The chime frame is smoothly lined with a false gold cloud pattern.
The tone of Zeng Houyi's woven chimes is sonorous, clear, bright, and penetrating; although the volume is not as large as the bell, it is not easy to be hidden by the bell; the afterglow is not as long as the bell, but it is more and more clear and agile. Zhong Chi plays together, and Jin Shi and Ming are shining together.
The shanghai studio of internationally renowned composer and conductor Tan Dun houses an official replica of a chime compiled by Zeng Houyi. There are only two official replicas of this in the world. The official strictly follows the timbre and style of the excavated chimes, and the replica restored 1:1 has also had high archaeological and artistic value.
