Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, is located at the southernmost tip of New Zealand's North Island, across the Cook Strait from the South Island, and is a key point of transportation between the North and South Islands. Wellington is located around 41 degrees south latitude, affected by the roaring west wind belt and the strait terrain, the four seasons are windy and strong, known as the "wind capital". Wellington has a beautiful coastline with rolling hills and greenery. With a permanent population of around 400,000, Wellington is known for its strong artistic atmosphere and cafes throughout the city, with large and small theatres, museums, galleries and other art venues in the city center, and has been selected by lonely planet travel guides as New Zealand's preferred travel destination, and has been nicknamed "the coolest little capital".
