This is the first facility of its kind to be located in a public park, which is why the design team conceptualized the club as a "fitness oasis" – "nature, fitness and community" that prioritizes the health and well-being of users and the environment.

SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Club offers a range of health and wellness activities for military personnel and their families in the country. This is the first facility of its kind to be located in a public park, which is why the design team conceptualized the club as a "fitness oasis" – "nature, fitness and community" that prioritizes the health and well-being of users and the environment.

The architectural embodiment also echoes the surrounding park environment. A number of innovative design features have been adopted around natural elements to create a sustainable development environment, while also elevating the primary vision of promoting fitness and supporting the health of the community.

This is first and foremost reflected in the massing of the building, which is distributed around a landscape atrium and along the axis of the park. The central landscape axis maximizes natural lighting and ventilation, reducing the use of artificial lighting and mechanical cooling. It also blends perfectly with the clubhouse and park.

In addition, the vegetation landscape is strategically planted around the perimeter of the building, and a rainwater harvesting system derived from computational fluid dynamics can simultaneously mitigate rainfall caused by open access and use rainwater for irrigation, thereby minimizing water consumption. The combination of vegetation can also help to mitigate the heat island effect in the city.

The whole of SAFRA Choa Chu Kang is filled with a rich tropical plant atmosphere, creating an atmosphere of closeness to nature that is rarely found in an urban environment. They are creatively intertwined with the clubhouse's integrated amenities, recreational spaces, and communal gardens to create synergies that bring people together and foster a strong sense of community while promoting wellbeing. This blend of nature, community, and lifestyle is further enhanced by the integration of biolandscapes and pedestrian networks throughout the development.

In order to better solve the problem of operational carbon, an active design strategy was adopted. These include the use of energy-efficient LED lighting designs, such as zoned automatic dimmers, heat recovery systems that reuse hot water from chillers, and reduced energy for electric heating; and photovoltaic panels. Combining these strategies, SAFRA Club Choa Chu Kang was able to produce renewable energy and maximise energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption by 42%.

This is underscored by a full-scope, life-cycle carbon assessment carried out in the early design stages. This is critical to understanding the project's embodied carbon footprint and determining the use of sustainable materials. The construction of SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Club uses eco-friendly concrete and recycled steel, reducing the embodied carbon emissions per unit of floor area by 23%.

"Having understood SAFRA's vision for its Choa Chu Kang Club, we developed an architectural style that not only satisfies its primary use as a national sporting and leisure venue for military personnel, but we wanted to challenge the stereotypes of this type of building and achieve meaningful buildings that achieve true sustainability outcomes through strategies that permeate and seamlessly integrate with nature, while promoting community unity and wellbeing."
