At the annual press conference of the Cannes Yachting Festival, Sanlorenzo confirmed the strong performance of the business, reflecting the effectiveness of its strategy, citing continuity and innovation as key pillars of growth. In the first half of 2024, the Italy shipyard achieved a major milestone on its way to achieve its ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2030, proving its central role as a sustainability pioneer in the yachting industry.
Financial data
At the annual press conference held during the Cannes Yachting Festival, which marks the start of the yacht show season, Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo, unveiled the financial results for the first half of 2024: net revenue from the sale of new yachts amounted to 415.1 million euros, an increase of 6.9% compared to the first half of 2023. In the first half of the year, Sanlorenzo achieved EBITDA of 74.2 million euros (+9.7 percent) and net profit of 43.6 million euros (+11.6 percent). Net organic investments in the first half of the year totalled 20.5 million euros, up 56% compared to the same period in 2023, of which around 90% was spent on expanding industry capacity and developing new ship models and product ranges.
"These outstanding results in the first half of the year make us proud and give us new impetus to continue on the path we have set. Special thanks to all the team in Sanlorenzo for their dedication and daily commitment that made it possible for us to stay on the planned growth track. Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo, said. These figures and results confirm the absolute reliability and effectiveness of our business model, as well as the rationality of the strategic choices outlined in our 'Road to 2030' plan. We have successfully completed two avant-garde projects, the delivery of a 50Steel yacht equipped with a green methanol reforming fuel cell system for onboard service implementation, and a hydrogen-powered BGH chase yacht built for two America's Cup Challenger teams. Last but not least, the acquisition of Nautor Swan, which was completed in early August, demonstrates our ability to identify high-value investment opportunities and integrate them into our long-term industrial strategy. ”
The strong results of the first half of the year and the imminent achievement of the guidance for 2024 confirm not only the effectiveness of the strategies adopted, but also the ability to maintain the right pace and achieve the ambitious milestones of the journey that Sanlorenzo has set for the coming years.
Vision 2030: Sustainability and technological innovation
Although leisure yachts account for only 0.22% of the total greenhouse gas emissions of the entire maritime industry, Sanlorenzo has made the strategic "Road to 2030" plan its mission to lead and anticipate the industry's path to carbon neutrality, making sustainability and technological innovation the drivers of growth in the decade leading up to 2030.
In order to achieve the goal set in the plan to gradually reduce its environmental impact, Sanlorenzo has signed strategic agreements with global leaders in energy and propulsion production, such as Volvo Penta, Siemens Energy and ·Rolls-Royc. The Italy luxury yacht company has an ambitious goal of delivering its first carbon-neutral motor yacht by 2030. Meanwhile, in 2024, two fundamental milestones were achieved with the delivery of the first 50Steel and two Bluegame chase boats:
50Steel
50Steel is the world's first superyacht to be equipped with a green methanol reforming fuel cell system, developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy and capable of converting green methanol into hydrogen and subsequently into electricity to power all of the yacht's service systems. This fully carbon-neutral system significantly extends the time a yacht can be berthed without the use of diesel, covering 85% of the typical superyacht's life, achieving zero emissions and reducing total annual emissions by 20-30%. This innovation makes Sanlorenzo a pioneer in the future of the yachting industry, with the IMO's agenda calling for a mandatory 20% reduction in emissions by 2030. As a result, Sanlorenzo is 6 years ahead of the global maritime industry.
BGH-HSV hydrofoil chase boat delivered by Bluegame
The second major achievement for 2024 is the delivery of the BGH (short for Bluegame and NatPower H)-HSV (Hydrogen Support Vessel – short for Hydrogen Support Vessel), the first chase boat powered entirely by zero-emission hydrogen. It is supporting the United States Magic and France Orient Express in their challenge for the 37th America's Cup. The creation of the BGH, capable of reaching 50 knots and 180 miles of range, involved extremely complex challenges in design, engineering and materials research, requiring years of work and significant R&D investments to achieve the necessary performance such as speed, maneuverability and reliability. These efforts have paid off, and the result represents a new milestone in the sustainability journey: hydrogen as a propulsion system is absolutely new not only for Bluegame and the Sanlorenzo Group, but for the yachting industry as a whole.
BGH-HSV hydrofoil chase boat delivered by Bluegame
Using the experience gained from the BGH-HSV project, the highest performance of current sustainable onboard technology, Bluegame is already working on BGM65HH (hydrogen hybrid) multi-hull, scheduled to be launched in 2027, with the aim of achieving 80 miles of zero-emission sailing. The vessel will benefit from the partnership with Volvo Penta and will feature the IPS Professional platform, which builds on the revolutionary success of Volvo Penta's IPS with improved efficiency, extended range, higher top speed and faster acceleration. The system is designed to increase efficiency, optimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions.
The next steps taken by Sanlorenzo towards more sustainable yachting will focus on the further development of fuel cell technology and the introduction of hybrid propulsion systems. On the one hand, the shipyard has signed a second agreement with Siemens Energy to further develop the Reformer fuel cell system technology, which will be completed by 2026, with the goal of expanding the use of fuel cells and further reducing size, weight and cost. On the other hand, thanks to the agreement between Ranieri Tonissi and Nanni Industries and MAN, Sanlorenzo aims to build a superyacht by 2027 with a dual-fuel system powered by 80% green methanol, thus achieving an equal proportion of emissions reductions, well above the target of 55% reduction by 2030 set by the European Union's "Fit for 55" package.
收购帆船制造商Nautor Swan
With sustainability at the heart of its growth strategy, Sanlorenzo continues to strengthen its position in the yachting market, not only by expanding its product line, but also through acquisitions such as the recently announced acquisition of Finland's Nautor Swan, a group actively involved in the design, construction, sale and modification of luxury sailing yachts under the Swan, Maxi Swan and ClubSwan brands, as well as motor yachts under the Shadow and Arrow brands.
This important acquisition marks the realization of a key milestone in Sanlorenzo's strategy: the shipyard and its sailboats represent an iconic global brand, an ultra-exclusive niche with a philosophy that is fully aligned with that of Sanlorenzo, rooted in elegance, quality and performance, thanks to advanced construction techniques, innovation and unrivalled seaworthiness. The Italy family, already a pioneer in sustainable yachting and leading research in the application of carbon-neutral technologies based on green hydrogen and methanol, will create a new market segment that does not currently exist. The union of Sanlorenzo and Nautor Swan will create a unique global yachting center: the best motor yachts and sailboats.
World premiere of the Cannes Yachting Festival
After showcasing the latest successes of the shipyard and sustainability trends in the yachting industry, Sanlorenzo will unveil two new models: the SL86A and SP92, at the world premiere in Cannes.
SL86A
The SL86A represents a new development in the application of asymmetrical concepts, fully exploiting its potential to create unique and life-optimized solutions, while maintaining the elegance and captivating style of Sanlorenzo design. Yacht advantages include a large main deck living area, designed as an open space, with the option of a spacious aft saloon and customisable forward dining area. The minimalist and innovatively designed aft area allows the yacht to sail without visible stairs and introduces transparent elements that enhance the connection with the sea.
SP92
With the SP92, Sanlorenzo reaffirms its commitment to advancing research in the field of high-performance sport yachts. This yacht combines the best of the technology in the range in terms of sailing performance and sustainability, and successfully applies the iconic design of the range to smaller models. Inspired by minimalism and clean lines, the design enhances the yacht's sportiness and balance while maintaining its unrivalled style, elegance and performance. The interior layout provides a solution that enhances space and livability. However, the standout feature is the spacious aft area: a 45 square meter beach area, which can be customized, with a hidden garage with retractable doors.
除了SL86A和SP92,这家意大利品牌将在戛纳展出圣劳伦佐各系列中最具代表性的游艇:SP110、SL96A、SL120A、SD96、SD118、SX76、SX88和SX100。
In Cannes, Bluegame also presented the BGM75, a real revolution in the world of yachting, thanks to the stabilizers installed on this catamaran after signing an exclusive agreement with Smart Gyro. However, the innovations on the BGM75 don't stop there: thanks to the reduced aspect ratio, this yacht stands out from other catamarans on the market, characterized by a seamless lower deck layout with four cabins and a very comfortable full-width owner's cabin – a feature never before seen in a catamaran. Finally, the ultra-efficient hull, designed by Philippe Briand, significantly reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, in line with Sanlorenzo's sustainability goals.
