Professor Chen Pingyuan of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge

The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge, but to cultivate oneself.

Now reading is no longer considered a serious, serious, and something that must be faced, and reading is not as persistent and important as before, so there is the question of how many years after graduation and whether to read.

After knowledge became readily available, the original three functions of reading—reading, seeking knowledge, and cultivating—were all affected.

In the past, when we read books, knowledge and self-cultivation were synchronized, now the level of knowledge seeking is replaced by retrieval, as long as we know the title of a book and the name of a person, retrieval is enough.

And the function of reading emphasizes the entertainment function more. After the original state of hard pursuit and searching up and down disappeared, knowledge was there, but cultivation was gone.

We used to admire Su Dongpo's poems "with poetry and books in the belly", and when we read more, the bookish spirit that ordinary people say comes out. Today, after my reading and cultivation are no longer synchronized, the shaping of personality, soul, temperament, and external image by reading has been cut off, which is a very serious problem.

This generation is my age in a transitional era, we are growing up in the age of books, and on the other hand, we are catching up with the digital age, and we can understand on both sides.

The next few generations of young people may have entered the digital age before they had time to understand the previous era. I have an understanding of how the upper and lower generations read, so I will feel emotional.

But for young people, lessons are useless, so I write down my reading experience, maybe there are some books that arouse their interest, and how many people can be influenced in the books.

In today's era of overwhelming information, it is difficult to establish one's own reading interest, to let one's position, vision and interest not be tempted by the surrounding environment. With the mass media, the homogenization of reading is too serious.

In fact, everyone's reading is different, and it is completely normal for a mathematician and a literature professor to have different interests. Readers should first establish their own reading interest and base point, and then talk about reading after having that base point.

The phrase "open book is beneficial" is often mentioned and has a deep impact, but I think that "open book is beneficial" as a slogan is worth scrutinizing.

Why open the book? What volumes to open? How to unbook? And how does it work?

Now we know that people who read a lot will succeed, but many people who don't read are also successful, and there are many more people who have read books all their lives without success, so reading books may not be successful, or "open books" may not be "beneficial".

Getting everyone to understand the slogan "Open books are good" is problematic in itself, because age, occupation, mood, reading goals, and so on can affect your reading. Author=Chen PingyuanSource=WeChat public account | Scholar excerpt from="Chen Pingyuan: Shallow Reading Degenerates People"

More than 200 years ago, Savigny, the "greatest jurist of the 19th century", successively taught more than 30 courses on legal methodology in many universities on the basic issues of law, which directly influenced the growth of more than one generation of jurists. This book is a restoration of the star-studded course scene of 200 years ago, not only Savigny's lecture notes, but also the lecture notes of the Germany jurist Green, "It is like sitting in the auditorium of Marburg University through time and listening to Savigny on the stage talk about legal methodology, and Green is sitting next to me......". Posner

Professor Chen Pingyuan of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge

Recommendation: The only current biography of Posner. At the age of 85, Judge Posner is a legend in contemporary legal circles, having written more than 50 books, more than 300 papers and more than 3,300 judgments, and is the most cited jurist in United States, the most cited appellate judge in United States, and the main founder of legal economics. It's no wonder that there's a joke about Posner, "Rumor has it that Posner sleeps every night." Posner was not only industrious and prolific, but also a maverick, criticizing his academic peers when he taught at the university, criticizing judges and courts when he was a judge, and not saying what the public wanted to hear as a public intellectual. Judge, jurist, and public knowledge cannot sum up Posner, and this biography helps us see the complex and complete Posner behind the labels. Posner himself was a great supporter of the biography, not only granting the author access to Posner's archival materials in the University of Chicago Library, but also accepting numerous face-to-face interviews and numerous e-mail questions. On top of that, more than 200 Posner colleagues, classmates, and friends helped write this book. These ensure that the book is a true description and review of Posner's life and intellect.

Professor Su Li's Recommendation: Professor Zheng Ge's vivid and accurate translation has reproduced Posner, the most creative, prolific jurist and judge in the Chinese United States world who has an unrivaled academic and judicial citation rate!

Sex and the Law

Professor Chen Pingyuan of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge

Testimonial: "Sex is a great and mysterious motive force in human life, and a fascinating subject throughout the ages." It's hard to believe that such romantic words come from a serious judge, but that's exactly what William · Justice J. · Brennan's 1957 judgment in Ross v. Confederation. Since the establishment of the law, "sex" has always been the content of the law trying to regulate, and issues such as marriage, contraception, abortion, obscenity, and same-sex sexual behavior have caused fierce struggles in different eras. "Sex and the Law" is written from the ancient concept of sexuality and sexual customs to today's "Roe v. Wade", which for the first time tells the long history of the collision between "sex" and "law": on the one hand, the continuous evolution of "sexual" culture in different eras, and on the other hand, the continuous regulation of sexual behavior and expression by "law". The book tells a series of historical figures, events and precedents related to "sex", and the gripping views and vivid background of the times are intertwined into the process of the collision between "sexuality" and "law", with more than 60 exquisite illustrations. Colombia University President Lee · C. Bollinger highly recommends: This book is sure to have a profound impact, and it will soon be on the required reading list, not only for law students and scholars, but also for all those who want to better understand this magnificent cultural change that will continue to shake society as a whole. The Last Glass: The Founding and Removal of Prohibition in United States

Professor Chen Pingyuan of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge

One sentence recommends: "Wine—the friend who comforts people in a troubled world—has been pronounced dead." "The Prohibition era was a "wonderful" era in United States history. It is inconceivable that United States, who have always "regarded freedom as their life", have amended the constitution on which the country was founded, declared war on alcohol with national power, and restricted an important pastime and right in their personal lives - drinking, thus creating an era of extreme chaos and charm. The well-known film and television works such as "Atlantic Empire", "Once Upon a Time in United States", "Iron Mask Selfless", and "Legend of Moonshine" are all set in this history. The author has gone through a vast archive of information and told readers about the whole process of the establishment and repeal of Prohibition and the social background of different stages, such as the Protestant faith in United States, the feminist movement, progressivism, racial discrimination, the income tax movement, the reorganization of federal and state government powers, the anti-German movement in World War I, the rise of organized crime groups, and other major historical events or changes, all of which have a great deal to do with the Prohibition movement. It can be said that this "last cup" condenses the history of changes in modern United States society and is an excellent window for in-depth understanding of United States' social, cultural and political games. The book won the 2011 Albert · Beveridge Award of the United States Historical Association. In the small wine glass, it can be described as treacherous, and the world is varied. In 1949, the United States jurist Fuller published his fictional "Cave Strange Case" in the Harvard Law Review, in which Fuller played the five corners of one person and fictionalized the judgment of five Supreme Court justices on the case. After a lapse of 50 years, in 1999, the editorial office of Harvard Law Review reopened the trial of this case, invited six contemporary jurists to rewrite their opinions on the case, and asked Professor David · Shapiro of Harvard Law School to write a case analysis of the 11 judgments before and after the case. This book is a complete collection of these 11 judgments and 1 commentary, hoping to convey this enduring legal problem again in Chinese, present a feast of speculation by jurists, and inspire legal professionals to further think about the relationship between law and human nature, justice and morality.
