Xie Danru's father, Xie Minfu, was a Qing Dynasty official, and his family had been engaged in business for generations, and he owned Fuyuan, Fude, and Fukang Qianzhuang in Shanghai, which can be described as a family fortune. Xie Minfu loves ancient books and paintings, and has a rich collection of books. To celebrate The Birth of Xie Danru, Xie Minfu built the three-bay and three-entry house at No. 68 Zixia Road, which was the most luxurious and magnificent house in the Wangjia Wharf area at that time.

Xie Danru loved new literature, and in his early years, he founded the "Shanghai Communication Library" with Ying Xiuren, Xu Yuanqi, Xu Gengquan, etc., to recommend progressive books and spread new ideas. In the spring of 1922, Ying Xiuren, Together with Feng Xuefeng, Wang Jingzhi, Pan Mohua, and others, founded the "Lakeside Poetry Society" that was quite influential in the history of modern Chinese literature, xie Danru was a member of the poetry club and published the book "Alfalfa Flowers". Because of his common ideals and beliefs, Xie Danru became close friends with Communists and revolutionary volunteers such as Ying Xiuren and Feng Xuefeng.

In the early 1930s, when Shanghai was shrouded in white terror, when Feng Xuefeng revealed that he wanted to arrange for Qu Qiubai to take refuge in Xie Danru's home, Xie Danru agreed without hesitation. One day in the summer of 1931, Feng Xuefeng accompanied Qu Qiubai and his wife to the residence of No. 68 Zixia Road in the Xie family. Xie Danru hid from the whole family, and everyone only knew that this friend's name was Lin Fu. Afraid of revealing Qu Qiubai's identity, Xie Danru no longer invited relatives and friends to his home for parties. In 1932, the Japanese Kou provoked the "1.28" war, and in order to avoid the fire, Xie Danru's family and Qu Qiubai and his wife moved to No. 10 Bixingfang, Bixun Road , The French Concession (now No. 10, Lane 64, Fenyang Road) in the French Concession, and did not move back to Zixia Road until the end of the war. Mr. and Mrs. Qu Qiubai lived in the Xie family's two residences for a year and seven months. During his stay at Bixingfang, Qu Qiubai unremittingly engaged in literary translation, writing the essay "Shanghai War and War Literature", the popular rap "Heroes Skillfully Present Shanghai", and the essay "New Hero" satirizing the surrender policy of the Kuomintang reactionaries.

In July 1932, under the leadership of Feng Xuefeng, Qu Qiubai crossed most of Shanghai and met mr. Lu Xun, who had been friends for a long time, from Zixia Road to Ramos Apartment on North Sichuan Road. On September 1, Lu Xun and Qu Qiubai met for the second time at Xie Danru's home. In The Diary of Lu Xun, it is written: "Before noon, he and Guangping visited the He family and his wife with the sea baby and had lunch at their apartment. "What is Qu Qiubai." According to Xie Danru's wife Qian Yunjin, this meeting was also led by Feng Xuefeng, and Lu Xun, who was deeply familiar with people, also bought a box of toys for Xie Danru's children when he went to Xie's house. This was Xie Danru's first close contact with Lu Xun and set up a family banquet to entertain Lu Xun and his wife and Qu Qiubai. Xie Danru thus became acquainted with Lu Xun. After Lu Xun's death, Xie Danru assisted Xu Guangping in editing Lu Xun's translation of the "Translation Series Supplement" and the publication of "Lu Xun's Complete Works", and later participated in the editing of "Lu XunFeng".

In 1957, 53-year-old Xie Danru and his family lived in No. 8, Lane 132, Shanyin Road. At present, the first floor of the site is part of the former residence of Lu Xun in Shanghai, and a desk displayed in the former residence of Lu Xun in Shanghai was given to Qu Qiubai by Xie Danru, who later transferred it to Lu Xun. In 1962, Xie Danru, who was then the head of the Lu Xun Memorial Hall in Shanghai, died of illness, and the Xie family jointly donated the manuscript of "Twenty-Five Thousand Miles" created by the Red Army collectively preserved by Xie Danru, the six letters and manuscripts of Ding Ling's letters to Feng Xuefeng, the photos of Ding Ling, Hu Yipin, Ying Xiuren and others, and the manuscripts of Guo Moruo, Wang Jingzhi and others to the Shanghai Lu Xun Memorial Hall.
