Why do quick-drying clothes dry faster than cotton clothes?
Some friends found that the cotton clothes that are usually very comfortable to wear are very uncomfortable when they sweat. However, wearing quick-drying clothes, even if you sweat like rain, you can quickly return to a dry state.
So why is it that cotton t-shirts are hard to dry when wet, but quick-drying clothes dry quickly? In fact, it is related to the moisture-wicking performance of the fabric.
The chemical composition and physical structure of the fibers of different clothes are different, and the moisture absorption and perspiration properties are also different.
Sweat is expelled from the surface of the skin, flows to the inner layer of fibers, and is absorbed.
01 cotton T-shirt
Cotton, linen, wool, silk, etc. are hydrophilic fibers, and sweat is easily adhered to the surface of clothes after being absorbed. To put it bluntly, sweat is easy to come in and hard to get out.
Cotton fibers have a hollow structure, which absorbs moisture and expands, and the air permeability becomes poor
02 quick-drying clothes
The quick-drying clothes use special chemical fiber fabrics, which allow sweat to flow better in the fiber gap by increasing the pressure difference or adding additives, and after flowing to the outer surface of the clothes, it will quickly evaporate.
There are three main methods:
Use moisture-wicking yarn
During production, the fiber cross-section can be designed into a special shape (such as Y-shaped, cross-shaped, W-shaped, bone-shaped, etc.), and grooves can be formed, and sweat can be quickly discharged through the wicking and moisture-conducting structure of the grooves.
Change the weaving structure of the garment
This method mainly makes use of the fabric differential capillary effect. During production, the inner layer of the garment can be woven a little bigger, and the outer layer can be woven smaller, so that the sweat can be discharged faster through the pressure difference between the inside and outside.
In addition, the inner layer of the garment is made of hydrophobic fibers and the outer layer is made of hydrophilic fibers, which can also easily achieve unilateral moisture conduction.
Add moisture-wicking aids
During the dyeing process, polyester polyether-like chemicals are added to speed up the flow of sweat by taking advantage of their hydrophilicity.
Note: After washing the quick-drying clothes several times, the effect of the additives will be weakened~
With so many quick-drying clothes, how to choose?
Some friends complain that there are many styles of quick-drying clothes, and the tag information is not the same, some write moisture-absorbing and perspiration-wicking, and some write moisture-absorbing and quick-drying level III... I feel like the CPU is about to burn up, and I don't know how to choose!

GB/T 21655.1-2023
GB/T 21655.1-2023 divides the moisture absorption and quick-drying properties into grade I., grade II and grade III by measuring the water absorption rate and drying rate.
The higher the level number, the better the effect.
GB/T 21655.1-2023 Evaluation of moisture absorption and quick-drying performance
According to the requirements, products with moisture absorption and quick-drying performance should be directly marked with several levels of moisture absorption and quick-drying, such as moisture absorption and quick-drying grade III., grade II or class I.
GB/T 21655.2-2019
GB/T 21655.2-2019 divides the corresponding properties into moisture absorption, quick drying and moisture absorption and perspiration by measuring the dynamic transfer state of liquid water after the liquid drops into the sample.
There are 5 levels, with level 5 being the best and level 1 being the worst.
GB/T 21655.2-2019 performance index classification
According to the requirements, the product can only be marked with the corresponding performance when it reaches the level of 3, 4 or 5 (no specific grade is required).
GB/T 21655.2-2019 technical requirements for performance assessment
(1) It is recommended to identify the national standard GB/T 21655.1-2023 or GB/T 21655.2-2019, and the evaluation of performance by other standards may not be accurate~
(2) The higher the level of moisture absorption and quick-drying performance/moisture absorption and perspiration performance, the better the effect:
>>GB/T 21655.1-2023, priority is given to "Moisture Absorption and Quick Drying Class III.";
>> GB/T 21655.2-2019, look for the words "moisture absorption and quick drying" or "moisture absorption and perspiration".
Note: Only "quick-drying" products may not be able to guarantee moisture absorption and quick-drying performance, so it is not recommended to buy.
(3) Jackets generally do not need moisture absorption and quick-drying performance, so it is recommended to buy thin, close-fitting quick-drying clothes.
