It's been ten years since I started raising jasmine. At first, I was attracted by the white snow-like flowers and rich fragrance of jasmine, and every time it bloomed, my home was filled with a pleasant floral fragrance that made people feel very comfortable.
However, as time went on, I gradually realized that jasmine was not as perfect as I thought, but had a lot of problems. Eventually, I decided not to keep it anymore and threw it on the street for 4 reasons.
1. Poor cold resistance
I live in a place where there are four distinct seasons, and the winters are especially cold. Although jasmine can tolerate a certain amount of low temperatures, it is very fragile in the harsh winter. When winter comes, the jasmine leaves begin to turn yellow, fall off, and sometimes even the entire plant withers. I tried a variety of ways to protect it, including building a small warm greenhouse indoors and covering the plants with insulation, but none of them worked well.
Jasmine always seems to lose its vitality in the cold winter, and this situation makes me feel very helpless and frustrated. After all, it's a pleasure to be able to see a touch of green and smell flowers during the cold season, but jasmine often doesn't meet my expectations at this time.
2. The requirements for water are too harsh
Jasmine has a very conflicting need for moisture. On the one hand, it needs plenty of water to thrive; On the other hand, it is very afraid of waterlogging. If watered too much, the root system of jasmine is prone to rot; If it is not watered enough, its leaves will dry up and fall off. This sensitivity to moisture makes my daily maintenance very tricky.
In order to find a suitable amount of watering, I tried many methods, such as deciding whether to water or not according to the moisture of the soil, or following a certain watering frequency. However, even if I carefully control the amount of water, the jasmine leaves still turn yellow and fall off from time to time. This unforeseen problem bothered me a lot, especially during the hot summer months, when the heat exacerbated the evaporation of water and made it difficult to maintain.
3. The flowering period is too short
The beauty and fragrance of jasmine when it blooms is impeccable, but its flowering period is very short. This short flowering period is a bit disappointing, as some other flowers, such as the moon season and the triangular plum, have a long and manageable flowering period and can continue to provide a beautiful visual enjoyment. And jasmine, in the time outside of flowering, is just an ordinary green plant.
To prolong the flowering period of jasmine, I tried various methods, including adjusting light, proper fertilization, and careful pruning. But the results of these efforts were very limited, and the jasmine flowers only lasted a few weeks. This makes me feel that the effort is not proportional to the return, especially for me who wants the garden to have flowers all year round, and the short flowering period of jasmine is particularly inappropriate.
4. The requirements for light are high
Jasmine is very demanding in its need for light. It needs plenty of sunlight to grow healthily, but it is afraid of strong direct sunlight. If there is not enough light, the leaves of jasmine will become dull and even yellow and fall off; And if the light is too strong, its leaves will appear sunburned.
During my maintenance process, in order to meet the light needs of jasmine, I had to move the pots frequently to find the most suitable light location. This not only makes maintenance more difficult, but also consumes a lot of time and energy. In contrast, plants that do not require much light, such as spider plants and pothos, are more worry-free and more adaptable to various environments.
Overall, these questions make me more and more annoyed by the care of jasmine. Despite the beauty and aroma of its flowers, it takes a lot of time and effort to maintain its healthy growth and flowering. Instead of struggling to take care of such a "delicate" plant, it is better to choose flowers that are easier to feed and more adaptable to environmental changes. Eventually, I decided to give up jasmine. Are you still raising jasmine?
