Some netizens posted a video saying
A newly opened restaurant in Wenfeng District, Anyang City, Henan Province
Several waiters fell to the ground
That day
According to a local circular
The store is smaller
The door of the store was closed at the time of the incident
The fire department tested for high carbon monoxide concentrations during rescue
It was preliminarily judged to be carbon monoxide poisoning caused by poor air circulation
After the incident, 7 people in the store were sent to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible
At present, there is no major problem with the personnel
3 people were hospitalized for observation
The remaining four were discharged from the hospital after receiving oxygen
The weather is hot in summer
Everyone habitually closes the door
Then turn the air conditioner on to the maximum
As everyone knows, danger also comes with it
In fact, in the hot summer
Carbon monoxide poisoning accidents can also occur
Accident cases
Case 1
On the evening of June 26, 2018, the owner of a restaurant, the proprietress and his friends in Quzhou City, Zhejiang Province, suddenly fainted in the store during a dinner. After being sent to the hospital for rescue, the concentration of carboxyhemoglobin (HBCO) in the blood of the three people was above 30%. The investigation found that when the restaurant owner used liquefied gas to process meals in the kitchen, he turned on the air conditioner due to the hot weather, closed the doors and windows, but did not turn on the exhaust fan of the range hood, resulting in poor indoor air circulation and the accumulation of carbon monoxide generated by insufficient combustion of liquefied gas, thus causing acute carbon monoxide poisoning.
Case 2
On July 6, 2022, an accident occurred in a family of three in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, while barbecuing meat at home. On the same day, in the face of the high temperature outside, the family decided to close the windows, turn on the air conditioner, and eat barbecue in an air-conditioned room.
Case 3
In the early morning of June 7, 2024, a group of patients came to the emergency room of Jinshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, and through asking about their medical history, they learned that 7 people ate supper together and ate charcoal barbecue in a closed environment, windowless and non-ventilated box, which lasted for more than 1 hour, and all 7 people experienced symptoms of dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and unsteady gait to varying degrees. Doctors diagnosed this as a typical case of carbon monoxide poisoning in a confined environment.

Clinical manifestations of carbon monoxide poisoning
- It is mainly hypoxia, and mild cases have headache, weakness, dizziness, and dyspnea after activity;
- Symptoms worsen, with cherry-red lips and may include nausea, vomiting, confusion, collapse, or coma;
- In severe cases, patients are in a deep coma, accompanied by high fever, increased muscle tone in the limbs, and paroxysmal or tonic spasms, and patients often have cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, myocardial damage, arrhythmias, and respiratory depression, which can cause death.
Some patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning will fall into a coma again after a period of 2~30 days of false recovery after a period of 2~30 days, and develop psychoneurological posterior diseases such as dementia stuporic psychosis, Parkinsonism, sensorimotor disorders or peripheral neuropathy, also known as delayed encephalopathy of acute carbon monoxide poisoning.
Even in summer, the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning still exists, such as closing doors and windows in air-conditioned rooms, using gas cooktops without turning on effective exhaust equipment, and using charcoal fires in closed environments are the main culprits of CO poisoning. Therefore, maintaining indoor air circulation is the most direct means to prevent CO poisoning.
First aid for carbon monoxide poisoning
- Quickly remove the poisoned patient from the scene of poisoning, move to a place with fresh air and good ventilation, unbutton his clothes and belts, and keep his breathing unimpeded;
- Call the 120 emergency number and send it to the hospital in time, and keep the unconscious patient in the lateral decubitus position to prevent vomit from being inhaled into the respiratory tract and causing suffocation;
- While waiting for emergency personnel, further observation and emergency treatment of the poisoned person are carried out; If the heart and breathing stop are found, perform CPR.
How to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
- There should be safety measures (such as chimneys, wind pipes, doors and windows for ventilation, etc.) when using coal and charcoal fires indoors.
- Do not use obsolete water heaters, such as in-line water heaters and flue water heaters, both of which are prohibited from being produced and sold by the state; Do not use water heaters that are out of service.
- When driving, don't let the engine idle for a long time; When the car is stopped, do not turn on the air conditioner for too long; Even when driving, you should open the windows frequently to allow convection of the air inside and outside the vehicle. If you feel unwell, you will stop and rest; If you feel dizzy, heavi, or weak in your limbs while driving or riding in an air-conditioned vehicle, you should open the window in time to breathe fresh air.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms where carbon monoxide may be generated. Carbon monoxide alarm is a device specially used to detect the concentration of carbon monoxide in the air, which can alarm in time when the carbon monoxide concentration exceeds the standard, and some can also forcibly open the window or exhaust fan to keep people away from carbon monoxide.
