Is it the best MPV in its class?
Hyundai Stargazer
I'm sure you've heard or read this sentence before (whether I've said it or someone else's said it): MPVs abound in the Philippines these days. Just check out one of our previous Big Test episodes — within those sections, there are plenty of options.
In this segment, there is a relatively new and arguably fresh model: the Stargazer. Hyundai finally decided to strengthen this MPV and take it up a notch, and the result is the Stargazer X.
I was already one of the lucky members of our team to be able to test drive the Stargazer X immediately after the launch, and I had the pleasure of driving it again after that. What's different this time? I test drove it for a whole week and I was really able to see how well it performed as a car for everyday use. Among the many affordable people cars, is this modern car worth considering? Read on to find out more.
sculpt
The Stargazer X still looks a lot like the "regular" Stargazer, but it does have some tasteful tweaks that make it stiffer than its non-X counterpart. The front is the same wide grille with headlights in an almost pizza-shaped shape, but in the Stargazer X, black glossy plastic replaces the gray trim.
The Stargazer X's grille also looks more prominent, with grey highlights that accentuate the horizontal slats. Of course, there are also stronger bumpers underneath the car, and the mesh trim on the lower lip is replaced by a more boxy lower grille.
Minor changes have also been made to the tail. The distinctive taillights extend the width of the rear doors, and Hyundai simply adds more plastic trim to the rear bumper to match the plastic trim on the front end. The Stargazer X also has a black cladding on the bottom, something that no other model in the series has.
Overall, the car looks very stylish. It's undoubtedly one of the best-designed MPVs in its class, and it doesn't look boring at all.
in-house
I've always loved the interior of the Stargazer – it's not high-end in itself, but it's simple and functional. In the Stargazer X, it looks even more pleasing to the eye thanks to the new black trim on the dashboard. It's a small detail, but it helps a lot with the quality of the cockpit.
I also say practical because the car has a lot of storage space. There's a full storage compartment underneath the dashboard, perfect for storing everyday essentials like wallets, phones, and keys. There's also room for these things on the center console. In the second row, there is also a small slot directly behind the center console, which may be used to store the phone when using the USB-A charging port. There is also a table behind the front passenger seat and multiple pockets behind the driver's seat. Third-row passengers also have several pockets to store their stuff.
In terms of space, it was very spacious. For the average Filipino adult, sitting in any of the three rows is fine. Yes, even the sixth and seventh passengers will have a good time, because the third row is not only easy to get in and out, but also comfortable to sit in.
Engine performance
The Stargazer X is powered by the familiar 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 113 hp and 144 Nm of torque, a powertrain we've seen in other modern cars before. It's matched to the brand's Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT), which, as I discussed in previous Creta reviews, allows for better throttle response and linear power delivery.
Creta's engine mix is also a perfect fit for the Stargazer X. When you're overtaking on the highway, it has enough power and enough torque to carry five to seven people as well as some cargo. It also has enough power to make you experience a passionate driving experience.
In mixed conditions, I drove the Stargazer with a stable fuel consumption of 10 km/l with a maximum of 4 people on board. On the highway, fuel consumption can reach up to 20 km/l, so this car is ideal for long drives.
Driving and handling
That's why I say the Stargazer X can achieve "passion driving", right? And it's not just because of the engine – the handling of this MPV is also good. It won't drive around corners, but for a family-oriented manned car, driving it can still be a lot of fun.
Of course, it is also an ideal everyday driving vehicle in the city. It maneuvers easily in tight spaces, the turning radius is not too large, it has an automatic hold function for more convenience in traffic jams, and it also comes with a parking assist that keeps the NVH level in the cabin to a minimum, making it comfortable to drive even on roads with poor road conditions. Still, you'll want to avoid potholes at all costs.
The Stargazer X also excels on long drives on the highway. The seats are nice and cushioned, so you won't get tired after sitting for hours.
Extra features
One of the highlights of the Stargazer X is the large 8-inch infotainment system mounted in the center of the front of the dashboard. The problem with this console, like most modern cars today, is that it only has wireless smartphone connectivity. There's no wired Apple CarPlay here, and like before, it's a bit shaky at times. I just wish there was an option for a wired connection in a modern car – it would make things a lot easier.
This console emits sound through a 4+2 speaker setup, and the effect is mediocre. It's okay on a small car, but it's a little lacking on an MPV with a larger compartment, especially for rear passengers.
The infotainment system is paired with a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, which is also a common feature of Hyundai cars. If you've seen or driven other car models, you'll be familiar with the beautiful color display, which is actually full of information and very easy to operate.
The Stargazer X is also equipped with safety and driver assistance technologies, including lane-keeping and lane-following assist, blind spot collision avoidance assist, and front and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist. It's a shame that it doesn't have adaptive cruise control, but that doesn't affect any of the other useful features, which in my opinion are always a great addition.
conclusion
The Hyundai Stargazer X may still be a newcomer to the field, but it's already one of the strongest products in the field right now. At a price of 1.348 million pesos, it's more affordable than some of its subcompact MPV competitors, while still being comparable in terms of performance and features.
Some time ago, when we conducted an MPV test, the Stargazer won by a huge margin. I have no doubt that if we had the Stargazer X and its more expensive label at the time, it would still be at the top. Hyundai is very competitive in this regard, and if you want to buy a seven-seater car that is worth the money, you should consider it.
