During his more than five years as a repairman in a resin factory, Zhang Chao often read professional books on stage and film performance. In 1978, at the age of 22, Zhang Chao made a surprising decision. A man from Jiayuguan, Gansu Province, came to Beijing on a hardboard train to apply for the Beijing Film Academy. After a series of twists and turns, Zhang Chao was admitted to the acting department of the film academy as he wished, and together with Zhang Fengyi, Zhou Lijing, Xie Yuan, Zhang Tielin, Shen Danping and others, he began to receive formal acting training.
