On the evening of the 17th, some netizens posted pictures saying that a R&D colleague of the cross-border e-commerce company Shopee (Shopee) died suddenly. According to the netizen who claimed to be an employee of Shopee's Shenzhen R&D department, at 22 o'clock on the evening of the 17th, he received an important notice from the personnel department on the company's internal office software Seatalk.
The notice said, "This afternoon (June 17), a colleague from Shopee R&D Center suddenly became unwell, and the team colleagues and the company immediately dialed 120 to send the colleague to the hospital, but it is very sad that the colleague left us forever after being rescued. ”

Nandu Bay Finance Agency sent a letter to Shopee for inquiry as soon as possible, but has not received an official response as of press time. However, some Shopee internal employees told Nandu Bay Finance Society that the intranet notice was true. And this breaking news also detonated the social media groups in the cross-border e-commerce circle.
As a cross-border e-commerce giant in Southeast Asia, Shopee's parent company Sea, although it recently won its first profit annual report on the market, its operation has been under pressure in recent years, and it has also attracted attention from the circle. Known as "Shopee" by people in the industry, Shopee was exposed to negative public opinion such as large-scale contract breaking and cancellation of employment at the end of 2022, and the "fat" performance of marketing by throwing money does not seem to be very optimistic about the industry.
Netizens broke the news that a colleague in the R&D post died suddenly
According to the content of the netizens' revelations, the relevant screenshots are from the company's intranet. The notice said, "We express our deep condolences for this, and at present, the company has set up a special team to cooperate with the family to go all out to do a good job in the aftermath." Colleagues, please contact your HRBP if you need any assistance. At this difficult time, we would also like to remind everyone to respect the privacy of colleagues and not to spread any unverified messages and personal photos through any channels. ”
The netizen also said in the revelation that Shopee has changed volumes. In the past, I usually worked overtime until 9 or 10 o'clock in the evening, and there was no overtime pay. There will be no compensatory leave for overtime at night, unless you work overtime until two or three o'clock in the morning, and you can rest for half a day the next day. "However, it is still better than other Internet companies overall."
Southeast Asian cross-border e-commerce giants: once caught in the "wave of contract breaking" and layoffs, and obtained the first annual profit report after many years of listing
Founded in 2015, the parent company Sea Donghai Group is a world-renowned consumer Internet company, Shopee is a cross-border e-commerce giant in Southeast Asia, and it is also a cross-border e-commerce platform that Chinese sellers will not ignore in the Southeast Asian market.
Covering more than 10 markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile, Shopee has also set up cross-border business offices in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hong Kong. In 2022, Shopee's total order volume will reach 7.6 billion, and the total number of orders will increase by 23.7% year-on-year under the global economic instability. Shopee has no other scenery.
In fact, Shopee's "volume" may have started a long time ago. In September 2022, the Southeast Asian e-commerce giant broke out a large-scale contract break and canceled offers, involving multiple positions including Shenzhen and Singapore. At that time, there were even "prospective employees" who flew to the headquarters to break the news that they had received a notice of work arrangements two seconds before the plane, but they received a call to cancel the job offer after the plane landed.
Recently, the cross-border policies in Southeast Asia have also ushered in a lot of adjustments, and the entry of players such as Lazada, TikTok, Temu and other players has also made the competition for cross-border e-commerce in Southeast Asia more and more intense.
Since its establishment in 2015, Shopee has been in a state of loss, and in 2017, based on the "burning money and drainage" method, the loss further expanded. Similar to the domestic Pinduoduo style of play, Shopee seems to have maintained a good market share in the moment, and the parent company has also ushered in its first profitable year, but it is still difficult to say whether it can be sustained in the future.
In 2023, the total annual revenue of Sea (Donghai Group), the parent company of Shopee, a cross-border e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia, increased by 4.9% year-on-year to US$13.1 billion, and its annual net profit reached US$163 million. However, it was still in the red in the fourth quarter.
