The "peace summit" in Ukraine held in Switzerland officially ended, the 14 participating countries refused to sign the joint communiqué, the vice president of the United States did not give Ukraine face and took the lead in leaving the venue early, and Zelensky chose to show favor to China again. Why did these 14 countries refuse to sign? What is Zelensky's reason for showing favor to China?
Hello everyone, I'm Xinchun. The first "peace summit" on the Ukraine issue, held in Switzerland recently, has become a "joke" in the international community. On the one hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky originally announced that more than 100 countries would attend the summit, but in the end only 77 countries signed the joint communique, 14 countries participated in the summit but refused to sign, and even Iraq and Jordan revoked this decision after the signing was completed. On the other hand, many BRICS countries, including China, did not send representatives to the summit, and many Western leaders attended the summit, but their attitude was very perfunctory. Although Zelensky announced that he plans to hold a second "peace summit" in a few months, no country is currently willing to take over and continue to host, which means that it is unrealistic to completely isolate and contain Russia in the international community, at least Ukraine and the United States and Western countries cannot achieve this goal now. It is worth mentioning that during the summit, representatives of countries such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia made it clear that meaningful progress can only be achieved with the participation of Russia.
In other words, if Russia is unable to participate in the discussions of the "peace summit" on the Ukraine issue, then the Ukrainian crisis cannot be resolved in the true sense of the word, and this military conflict, which should not have happened, will continue, and Ukraine will be the biggest loser regardless of the final outcome. As for the refusal of the 14 participating countries, including the BRICS countries, to sign the joint communiqué, this is actually expected.
What is the essence of the Ukrainian crisis, after more than two years, the international community has basically become very clear. It is true that countries do not approve of Russia's special military operation against Ukraine, but they also do not understand Ukraine's unwillingness to "negotiate peace". Taking the Swiss "peace summit" as an example, Russia, as another party to the conflict, was not invited, which means that the real purpose of this summit is to attack Russia, use the pressure of international public opinion to force Russia to make certain compromises and concessions on the Ukraine issue, and meet the interests of the United States, Western countries and Ukraine. Therefore, in the eyes of analysts, this meeting is not so much a "peace summit" as a "criticism meeting".
Since the United States and Western countries held this summit in order to let the participating countries "choose sides", those countries that maintain an objective and neutral attitude and position will naturally not be used to it, so 14 countries refused to sign, and 2 countries made a decision to revoke it after signing, which made Ukraine and the host Switzerland very embarrassed. However, compared with this "cold" "peace summit", the perfunctory attitude of the United States and Western countries to this has made Zelensky very dissatisfied. Previously, U.S. President Biden was unable to attend the "peace summit" because of "schedule conflicts", which made Zelensky quite complaining, although the Ukrainian government repeatedly persuaded Biden to attend the meeting, emphasizing Biden's importance to the "peace summit", but they were ignored, and finally U.S. Vice President Harris and National Security Advisor Sullivan led the team to attend the meeting. But after attending the dinner, Harris took the lead in choosing to leave the venue early, leaving all the follow-up matters to Sullivan to deal with. Although the explanation given by the United States is that "government affairs are busy", this move also directly exposes the contemptuous and perfunctory attitude of the United States towards this "peace summit". Perhaps in their eyes, there is no need to come to the meeting at all, which is a complete waste of time.
It's just that considering that the United States is currently providing a large amount of military assistance to Ukraine, or that the United States has decided the fate and future of Ukraine, Zelensky can't vent his emotions even if he is dissatisfied. In this context, Zelensky set his sights on China, and unlike the previous tough remarks accusing China of not sending representatives to the meeting, this time Zelensky took the initiative to send a goodwill signal to China, saying that Ukraine has never said that China is an enemy and hopes to be friends with China. Obviously, after this "peace summit", Zelensky finally understood one thing, that is, who has been working hard for the resolution of this crisis and who has been contributing their own strength. If Ukraine does not want to fall victim to this geopolitical game, then it must listen to the proposals put forward by countries that are committed to promoting peace talks, including China, so that Ukraine's losses and impact can be minimized, otherwise Ukraine will completely lose hope for its national future and development.
