At present, in Shenmu City, Shaanxi Province, the country's largest desert freshwater lake - Hongyanao, nearly 5,000 nests of relict gulls have entered the incubation and brooding period, and a large number of newborn relict gull chicks have broken out of their shells one after another. In the past, due to the decrease of upstream water, the water area has been shrinking, the water quality has deteriorated, and the number of water birds has been decreasing. In recent years, through measures such as strengthening scientific protection, increasing the amount of water entering the lake, and promoting ecological restoration, Hongyanao has regained its vitality and become an important habitat and breeding ground for the relict gull, a national first-class wild protected animal.
