Origin and development

The sport of roller skating is a transition from the sport of ice skating. As early as the 80s of the 18th century, there was a Dutch skater, in order to continue training in the non-icing season, tried to put a wooden spool under the leather shoes, sliding on the flat ground, his experiment was finally successful after continuous failure and improvement, creating the history of "skating" with wheel shoes, since then roller skating in Europe was born, rose and has been developed rapidly.

In 1863, James Primpton of the United States invented roller skating, he innovatively replaced wooden wheels with metal wheels, and his invention promoted the development of roller skating in various countries. On April 1, 1892, the International Roller Skating Union was founded in Switzerland, and the sport of roller skating was formalized. On April 4, 1924, representatives of Britain, France, Germany and Switzerland established the International Skating Organization in Montreux, Switzerland, which was officially renamed the International Skating Federation in 1925 and began to organize the World Championships.

Shanghai Ice Rink

According to the "Declaration", as early as 1879, there was already a record of the Shanghai ice rink, which was located on the upper floor of a storehouse on Guangdong Road at that time, and offered four-wheeled ice skating. By 1918, there was already a skating competition in Shanghai, and the organizers held this event with the purpose of "advocating sports, playing games, arousing the concept of competition among the Chinese people, and inspiring the martial spirit of the Chinese people", which caused a lot of sensation in the surrounding areas. In order to attract more tourists, ice rinks have come up with different tricks, some attract customers at low prices, and some increase the interest of customers by holding amateur skating competitions with rich content.

Yongan runs the ice rink

From the 20s to the 30s of the 20th century, the main places for public skating activities were the New World Ice Rink at the intersection of Nanjing Road and Xizang Road, and the Daxin Company Ice Rink, all of which were privately opened. At that time, Yongan Company followed the trend and turned all 4 floors of Yongan New Building into an ice skating rink, which once became a well-known "Internet celebrity landmark" in Shanghai at that time. In May 1939, Yongan Monthly called the ice rink "the only and most complete and noble ice rink in Shanghai", with standard floors, standard running shoes, special seats, hot and cold drinks, special pastries, and exquisite Western dishes.

From "Ice Skating" to "Roller Skating"

With the popularity of ice skating in Shanghai, the development of skate material technology is also continuous. Roulette materials have evolved from the original iron and sandalwood to tape and nylon, and the material technology has continued to advance, making it silent, dust-free, comfortable, and wear-resistant...... The skates industrialized in Shanghai are not only of high quality and have become national competition shoes, but also exported to overseas and are at the top level in Asia.

The iterative update of sports equipment also plays a role in promoting the popularization of the project. In November 1981, with the establishment of the Shanghai Roller Skating Association, roller skating replaced the century-old "skating" in the mouths of citizens and became a more professional name. In 1987, the former Municipal Sports Commission made the roller skating queue a first-line team, and the training base was set up in the Huangpu District Stadium and the Municipal Sports Palace.

According to statistics, by 1990, there were 86 roller skating rinks in the city, and more than one million people participated in the activities every year. The popularization of mass movements has also provided the soil for the improvement of the level of professional ranks. The Shanghai roller skating team has won more than 40 gold medals in all national competitions in the 80s of the 20th century, especially in the men's and women's figure skating events, the Shanghai team has always maintained its advantage.

"Post-00" champion

Skateboarding has been an official sport since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Skateboarding, figure skating, freestyle skating, and speed skating are included in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

In 2023, in the mixed freestyle roller skating men's and women's double freestyle pile wrapping finals of the Hangzhou Asian Games track skating event, Zhang Hao and Zhu Siyi, post-00 youngsters who represented the Shanghai team, won the championship.

Zhang Hao and Zhu Siyi won the championship

The tacit cooperation on the stage makes it hard to believe that Zhang Hao/Zhu Siyi has been partnered for less than a year. As with other pairs events, a high degree of tacit understanding is required in the competition, and how to achieve consistency in a short period of time, Zhang Hao and Zhu Siyi's answer is to cooperate with each other. With ease on the field and hard practice off the field, these two "post-00" roller skating champions have also injected youth into the development of Shanghai's roller skating career.
