What is high blood pressure?

Hypertension is diagnosed when blood pressure is measured in the office three times a day without antihypertensive drugs, and systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg. The criteria for determining home blood pressure measurements are different from office blood pressure, and a home blood pressure reading ≥ 135/85 mmHg is considered hypertension.

The dangers of high blood pressure

Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases, and is the most important risk factor for the morbidity and mortality of heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease, and the deaths caused by cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in mainland China account for more than 40% of the total national deaths, and about 70% of stroke deaths and about 50% of myocardial infarction are closely related to hypertension.

Take your blood pressure regularly

Adults should self-monitor their blood pressure regularly and watch for changes in blood pressure. People at high risk of hypertension such as overweight or obesity, high-salt diet, smoking, long-term alcohol consumption, long-term mental stress, and insufficient physical activity, as well as those with high normal blood pressure (120~139/80~89mmHg), should have their blood pressure measured frequently. The blood pressure of first-time patients over the age of 35 is measured by medical institutions. Actively encourage hypertensive patients to carry out self-measurement and self-management of blood pressure at home, and self-test blood pressure once a week for those whose blood pressure is up to standard and stable; If the blood pressure is not up to standard or unstable, the number of self-blood pressure measurements should be increased. It is recommended to use an automatic electronic sphygmomanometer with an upper arm type that has been certified and qualified by international standards.

Prevention of high blood pressure

Exercise: Regular activity, such as walking, swimming, tai chi, housework, etc., can prevent and control high blood pressure, preferably at moderate intensity.

Limit salt intake: A high-salt diet increases the risk of hypertension, and adults should try not to consume more than 5 grams of salt per day.

Reduce your intake of foods rich in fat and sugar, limit the use of cooking oil, and eat more vegetables and fruits.

Eat less fast food: Eating at home as much as possible can help control your intake of fat, salt and sugar.

Quit smoking and drinking: Tobacco and alcohol are harmful to health, so try to use them sparingly or not at all.

Treatment of high blood pressure

The vast majority of patients need to take antihypertensive drugs for a long time and regularly, and antihypertensive therapy must be targeted.

Blood pressure goals for antihypertensive therapy: blood pressure should be reduced to less than 140/90 mmHg in patients with hypertension and 130/80 mmHg in patients with diabetes mellitus or chronic kidney disease; Patients over 80 years of age are reduced to less than 150/90 mmHg. In patients with coronary artery disease, hypotension to 60 mmHg should be lowered with caution.

Most hypertension is essential hypertension, which is generally incurable and requires long-term medication. Do not blindly believe illegal advertisements or pseudo-scientific propaganda, and do not use health products, health physiotherapy or dietary therapy instead of antihypertensive drugs.

Most hypertension can be controlled, and those who are poorly controlled should seek medical attention promptly and have the treatment plan adjusted by a medical professional.

Precautions for elderly patients with hypertension

Hypertension in the elderly is one of the common chronic diseases in the elderly, which is characterized by high morbidity, high mortality, high disability rate, low awareness rate, low treatment rate and low control rate. About 1 in 2 elderly people have hypertension, and long-term standardized treatment and follow-up management are required.

Elderly patients with hypertension must take antihypertensive drugs on time and quantitatively, and cannot change or stop drugs without authorization, so as not to aggravate the condition; In the daily diet, we should reduce the intake of sodium, salt and fat, eat less or no pickled food, fatty meat, animal offal and fried food, eat more fresh vegetables, fruits and legumes and other potassium-rich foods, quit smoking and limit alcohol.

At the same time, it is also necessary to maintain good living habits, and can do appropriate physical exercises, such as tai chi, walking, etc. Maintain adequate sleep time every day and avoid staying up late, which can help improve immunity and maintain health; Self-monitor your blood pressure as prescribed. It is recommended to self-measure your blood pressure in the morning, after taking blood pressure medications, before breakfast, and after urinating. If the patient's blood pressure is abnormal, headache, dizziness, etc., it is necessary to see a doctor in time. (Correspondent Sun Fengsong)
