The number of Hollywood production projects has rebounded, but it is still below pre-strike levels

According to data recently released by FilmLA, a professional agency responsible for coordinating filming permits for film and television projects in the Los Angeles area, Hollywood film and television production has slowly recovered from last year's double strike by the Writers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild, but the number of production projects is still far below the pre-strike level.

In the first quarter of 2024, the total number of days Hollywood had actual on-site filming increased to 6,823 days, an increase of 23% from the fourth quarter of 2023, but still not at the same time in 2023 and 20% below the average for the same period in the past five years. The number of projects entering the production stage was already declining, even before the industry came to a standstill due to the double strikes last summer.

Now, nearly six months after the end of the double strike, Hollywood's resumption of work has been much slower than previously expected. Philip Sokoloski, a spokesperson for FilmLA, explained, "We think the main reason for this is that there is a significant delay in the recovery of the number of film and television productions, which can take about six to eight weeks for TV dramas and even longer for films." ”

The data published by FilmLA includes all types of productions, as well as detailed data by production type, covering commercials, reality shows, TV series, films, documentaries and music videos, and has long been recognized as a reliable indicator of overall production trends in the industry.

The FilmLA genre also shows a surprising result – while the production of films and TV episodes has rebounded since the end of the double strike last November, reality shows, which are not directly affected by the strikes, have instead seen a decline in the first quarter of 2024.

Philip Sokolowski concludes that the data shows that the strike is just one of the many factors contributing to the overall decline in Hollywood film and television production, "It is not difficult to see that it will take time for the industry to recover to its pre-COVID level, the number of projects currently produced is not optimistic, and the bubble of rapid streaming is bursting, many of the series in production have been reduced, and many series have been cut directly." At the same time, data shows that many commercials have moved to other parts of the U.S. outside of Hollywood, or moved overseas production. ”
