The 77th Cannes International Film Festival opens
The 77th Cannes International Film Festival kicked off in the southern French city of Cannes on the evening of the 14th, and the Chinese film "Merry Generation" participated in the competition for the highest award - the best film "Palme d'Or".
A total of 22 films were shortlisted for the main competition unit of this film festival and competed for the "Palme d'Or". Among them, the 85-year-old famous American director Francis Ford Coppola will bring his new work "Metropolis" to hit the third "Palme d'Or" in his career. The jury of the main competition will be chaired by American actress and director Greta Gerves, who will decide the Palme d'Or with eight other judges, including Japanese film director Hirokazu Kore-eda.
This year, a number of Chinese films were shortlisted for the Cannes Film Festival. Chinese director Jia Zhangke broke into the main competition unit for the sixth time with his new film "Merry Generation"; Guan Hu's film "Dog Formation" will compete with more than a dozen films for the "Un Certain Regard" unit award, which focuses on emerging directors and niche films. Hong Kong director Cheng Po-sui's "The Siege of the Kowloon Walled City" was shortlisted for the "Midnight Screening" section, Chen Hoxin's "Sauce Garden Lane" will be screened as a non-competition film, and the 4K restored classic film "Eagle Project" starring Jackie Chan will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival Beach Cinema.
The opening ceremony of the festival was hosted by French actress Camille Cotán, and the comedy film "Act II" by French director Quentin Dupieu was chosen as the opening film. On the same night, American actress Meryl Streep, who won the Best Actress award at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, attended the opening ceremony as an honorary guest and was awarded the honorary Palme d'Or. The festival will run until May 25 and the winners will be announced at the closing ceremony.
The Cannes International Film Festival in France, along with the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany and the Venice International Film Festival in Italy, is known as the three major film festivals in Europe.
