According to Thai media news, on May 13, Thailand's new Foreign Minister Marley, Thai Defense Minister Su Ting, and the foreign minister's adviser visited the Sing khon-Motong border checkpoint in Prachuap Khao Province, the Thai-Myanmar border area, to promote the region to become another choice for Thai products to be exported to Yangon, Myanmar after the Mae Sot-Myawadi border crossing.
It is understood that the above-mentioned border crossing points ranked 3rd in border trade volume in 2023, after Mae Sot-Myawadi and Phu Nam Ron-Htee Khee, with a total trade volume of 37.864 billion baht. Among them, 90% of imports from Myanmar are fishery products, while exports to Myanmar mainly include consumer goods, plastics, construction equipment and fruits. However, due to the situation in Myanmar, trade at the border crossing has fallen by about 20 per cent.
During the visit, Foreign Minister Mali was briefed on the problems and potential of the site in various aspects, focusing primarily on the economic dimension rather than diplomatic matters, in order to implement Prime Minister Saita's active economic foreign policy and understand the needs of the private sector in the region. In addition, he plans to develop Sing Khon Station into a permanent checkpoint to shorten the travel time and transportation costs to China and Malaysia.
