After 5 months of preparation and investment, the top three finalists of the first Hypak™Design National College Student Theme Design Competition were recently born at the Shanghai Institute of Innovation and Creative Design (DIIS). The competition was jointly established by DIIS and Jiangsu Qingyun New Materials Co., Ltd. (Qingyun New Materials), and the DIISx Qingyun Kunlun ™ New Materials Laboratory jointly established by the two parties provided full support for the competition, aiming to explore the infinite possibilities of Kunlun materials in creative design and create a propeller for the innovation of applied new materials.

It is understood that the theme of this competition is "gifts", which requires participants to use Kunlun ™Hypak™ design to make different types of gifts, explore the meaning and value of gifts in different situations, and combine them with the special properties and textures of Kunlun ™ materials to give new meaning to gifts.

The scene of the finals

Kunlun ™Hypak™ is a special fiber material independently developed by Qingyun New Materials ™, which is made of flash spinning process spinneret hot pressing, natural color is white, and is presented in two different structural forms: hard structure materials like paper, and soft structure materials like cloth, the material is suitable for a variety of processing processes, strong plasticity, widely used in the upstream and downstream of the high-end application of non-woven fabrics and special paper, and can be used in nearly 100 application scenarios and industries.

Unlike traditional competitions, this competition emphasizes not only the innovation of design, but also the ability to transform ideas into real-world products. As one of the few design competitions that can directly transform students' works into landing products, the Hypak™Design Design Competition requires participants to not only consider the artistry and practicality of the design, but also deeply explore the commercial feasibility of the work and make a prototype.

Since its launch in December last year, the theme design competition has received more than 400 college students from more than 20 universities around the world, and more than 50 valid works have entered the preliminary competition, covering multiple fields from industrial design, product design to fashion design.

The judges review the shortlisted entries

After the jury evaluated from multiple dimensions such as innovative design, solving practical problems, commercial feasibility, and sustainable concepts, the top three proposals stood out, followed by Li Xinyu from Shanghai Normal University who designed a gift for plants - a "bloomable" flower planter folded through waterproof and breathable materials, a portable pneumatic U-shaped pillow based on the principle of inflatable deformation developed by Yu Sinan of Tongji University, and Dong Runlin, Zhou Zihan and Wu Yuting from ShanghaiTech University Reminder gift box.

Guest comments on the finals

It is reported that the DIISx Qingyun Kunlun ™ New Materials Joint Laboratory was established in September 2023, hoping to explore the infinite possibilities of Kunlun ™ materials through creative design. After the completion of the laboratory, it not only carried out hundreds of external exhibitions, but also organized a number of interdisciplinary workshops to explore innovative application scenarios.

"This competition is the first large-scale open innovation project after the establishment of the joint laboratory, and it is a full-link large-scale open innovation transformation attempt for more than 20 universities around the world." Zhang Jie, director of strategic development and head of ecological incubation of the Institute, said that the development, promotion and application of new materials are inseparable from the design thinking of "real problem traction, interdisciplinarity, and full link", and hopes to enrich the innovation and application scenarios of new materials through the form of competition, incubate new products and models, and also hope to provide a stage for young designers to show their talents and realize their dreams through this form.

Next, DIIS and Qingyun New Materials will transform the award-winning works on the ground, and will invite innovative and creative practitioners to join the longer-term resident creation, integrate design, technology and business, and carry out in-depth interaction between industry, academia and research with the method of "co-creation", so as to effectively create a propeller for the innovation of applied new materials.
