Designed by renowned architect Ryue Nishizawa, SSH No.03 is a profound tribute to the concept of negative space in Japan. The latest addition to the Shishi-Iwa House series in Karuizawa, just an hour's train ride from Tokyo, offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. SSH No.03 is adjacent to SSH No.01 and SSH No.02, designed by another Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Shigeru Ban, and together create a harmonious and serene natural environment.

The design of the project is inspired by the concept of "negative space" in traditional Japanese architecture, especially "transparency" and "ma". By skillfully arranging the building volumes and open spaces, Ritsue Nishizawa has created a series of grey space corridors and courtyards that are both part of the building and an extension of the natural environment, forming a unique intermediate space that enhances the dialogue between architecture and nature.

The material choices and design details of the building are heavily influenced by Japanese architectural traditions, with the extensive use of cypress, considered sacred, a wood that is considered sacred due to its durability and unique aroma, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also weather-resistant, making it ideal for Karuizawa's changing climate.

SSH No.03 includes ten separate pavilions, each designed with a subtle blend of modern and traditional elements, with simple yet refined lines that reflect the spirit of Japanese architecture. Interaction with nature is also emphasized, with large glass windows and a spacious space layout that seamlessly connects the indoor and outdoor environments. This not only allows the building itself to be part of the landscape, but also allows the occupants to experience the stunning natural beauty from all angles.

Through its unique design and architectural practices, the project explores how to introduce innovative elements while respecting tradition to create modern architectural works that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. The design philosophy and execution have made SSH No.03 an iconic project that not only enhances the quality of life for its occupants, but also provides visitors with a window into contemporary Japanese architectural culture.
