(Ding Mang and his wife Fan Yuyuan)
On May 11, 2024, Ding Mang, a famous poet, writer, literary critic, and calligrapher, passed away in Nanjing at the age of 99.
Ding Mang wrote tens of thousands of poems in his lifetime, and the saying that "there is Zang Kejia in the north and Ding Mang in the south" is widely circulated in the Chinese poetry circle.
Ding Mang's marriage was bumpy, divorcing his ex-wife, remarrying, and later divorced. In 1977, he remarried Fan Yuyuan.
Ding Mang's remarriage was resolutely opposed by Fan Yuyuan's mother-in-law and her three daughters. In 1983, the movie "Moon to Mid-Autumn Festival" based on Ding Mang and Fan Yuyuan was released nationwide and touched thousands of audiences.

Ding Mang, formerly known as Chen Yan, was born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province in September 1925, and his father was a clerk in the telegraph office. In 1938, when the Japanese invaded Nantong, Ding Mang's father fled to the countryside with his family with the severance pay given by the telegraph office.
Half a year later, the severance pay was spent, and in order to survive, Ding Mang's father returned to Nantong with the family. He worked as a clerk at the Baipu District Office, and Ding Mang's sister Chen Lijun taught at Baipu Primary School.
Baipu Primary School has some fields, and the locals call it Xuetian. The school rents the land to local farmers for farming, and the rent fee is used to support the education of local poor children.
After Ding Mang entered junior high school, his father applied for a bursary from the school. So, Ding Mang studied boarding at Nantong Middle School, where he completed his junior high school and high school studies.

The school has requirements for the grades of children who get bursaries, and Ding Mang scores more than 80 points in every homework and can get a bursary of 30 yuan per semester.
After graduating from high school in 1943, Ding Mang's family could not afford to send him to college, so he joined the Nantong cooperative as a clerk. Ding Mang was assigned to work in the Baipu Branch, and the unit was located in Nanshiqiao, Nantong.
There are dozens of steps in the south stone bridge, and the southeast of the bridge is the Hoho Temple. Every day after work, Ding Mang passed by the South Stone Bridge at dusk. At that time, the sunset was full of sky, the smoke of the farmhouse was rising, and the bell in the temple was melodious.

Ding Mang touched the scene and created seven unique "Stone Bridge Twilight Return":
The south stone bridge is high and the sun falls, and the corner of the vast temple is slanted in the evening.
The twilight bell smashes the light wave moon and invites the breeze to my house.
After the poem was published in a newspaper in Nantong, Ding Mang became well-known in the local area.
In 1945, on the recommendation of his seniors, Ding Mang joined the "Jiangbei Daily". He writes news articles and is responsible for the editing of two supplements, "Prose" and "Poetry Line".
After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, "Jiangbei Daily" was taken over by the Kuomintang and renamed "Southeast Daily". Under the impact of the revolutionary wave, Ding Mang had a firm belief in communism.
As a result, Ding Mang and his colleague Sun Tianping were fired from the newspaper. On March 7, 1946, Ding Mang, escorted by our party's traffic officer, arrived at the seat of the government of the Huai'an Suzhou-Anhui Border District.
Ding Mang's colleagues Sun Tianping, Gu Xunyi and other 8 roommates were brutally killed by the Kuomintang. Ding Mang was filled with grief and indignation, and for the first time used "Ding Mang" as his pen name to create "The Diary of a Journalist in the Kuomintang Autonomous Region" to expose the dark rule of the Kuomintang reactionaries.
Since then, he has used the name Ding Mang, and his real name Chen Yan has been forgotten.

In 1946, Ding Mang was admitted to Central China Construction University of the New Fourth Army with excellent results, and after graduation, he joined the 35th Brigade of the 12th Column of Huaye as a war correspondent.
Ding Mang risked his life to go deep into the front line of the Huaihai Campaign to interview, and later created influential reportage such as "Sea Eagle" and "Hero Boat".
After the liberation of the country, Ding Mang ushered in the peak of creation. In 1955, Ding Mang was transferred to the General Political Department as the editor of the book series "Sparks in the Plain".
The book was inscribed by Chairman Mao with the title and Zhu De as the preface, and was called "an oriental epic that recounts the Chinese Revolutionary War".

In 1956, Ding Mang's poem "Dai Village Nocturne" caused a huge response after it was published in the People's Daily. The famous painter Ye Qianyu illustrated the poem, and Ding Mang became famous in one fell swoop.
In the 60s of the last century, Ding Mang got married, his wife was also a literary and artistic worker, and the couple gave birth to a daughter and a son. The daughter's name is Chen Qian, and she is also engaged in literary and artistic work when she grows up.
Originally, Ding Mang's family of four lived a peaceful and happy life, but who knew that the special era began in 1966, Ding Mang was expelled from the party twice due to his background, and his administration was demoted by three levels. The wife was implicated and was under pressure from all sides.
Soon Ding Mang divorced, and a pair of children lived with his ex-wife.

However, Ding Mang still has feelings for his ex-wife, plus the two children need a complete home. In the early 70s of last century, Ding Mang remarried his ex-wife.
In 1970, Ding Mang transferred from the army and returned to Nantong Phosphate Fertilizer Factory for labor reform, and his wife and a pair of children also lived in Nantong.
Ding Mang regarded poetry as his life, and in the days when his income was very low and his spirit was suppressed, he still had to read and compose poems every day. This was unacceptable to the wife, and the couple often stumbled.
In 1975, Ding Mang divorced again, and the two children still lived with their mother. The marriage was broken again, which brought great trauma to Ding Mang's heart.

After the divorce, Ding Mang often went to visit a pair of children, and he saved money for himself, but every time he went to see his two children, he had to buy them some fruits and snacks.
Every time they separated, the two children were reluctant, full of tears, and Ding Mang's eyes were moist.

At the beginning of 1977, Ding Mang served as the head of the propaganda section of Jiangyin Chengxi Shipyard directly under the Ministry of Communications. Jiangsu Provincial TV Station came to the factory to shoot the news of the completion of the "Changshan" floating dock project, and Ding Mang met the female reporter Fan Yuyuan.
Fan Yuyuan is 12 years younger than Ding Mang and is a native of Guo Yuan, Rugao, Jiangsu. She is a talented woman who writes a lot of influential news reports and writes poetry in her spare time.
Fan Yuyuan admired Ding Mang and looked at him with an upward gaze. Ding Mang also likes Fan Yuyuan, a kind, simple, and beautiful female reporter.

Like Ding Mang, Fan Yuyuan's emotions are also very vicissitudes. A few years ago, her husband Wang Shengyi passed away due to illness, and Fan Yuyuan took her three daughters to live with her mother-in-law.

Soon, Ding Mang and Fan Yuyuan established a relationship. When Fan Yuyuan's mother-in-law found out, she resolutely opposed her remarriage because she was afraid that her three granddaughters would be wronged.
The mother-in-law asked Fan Yuyuan to live alone and raise her 3 daughters. Fan Yuyuan's three daughters also opposed their mother's remarriage, especially the eldest daughter.
The mother-in-law and her three granddaughters stood aside to prevent Fan Yuyuan from living with Ding Mang.
A deputy director of Jiangsu TV is an old comrade-in-arms of Ding Mang, and he very much supports Ding Mang's remarriage with Fan Yuyuan. He also rushed to Fan Yuyuan's house to do the work of her mother-in-law and daughter, and although he did not convince them, he gave Fan Yuyuan strong psychological support.

In May 1979, Ding Mang was transferred to Jiangsu Provincial People's Publishing House as deputy director of the literary editorial office. As a result, Ding Mang lives under one roof with Fan Yuyuan, her mother-in-law and three daughters.

In 1981, a friend gave Ding Mang an electronic piano that his sister's children wanted. But in order to ease the relationship with his stepdaughter, Ding Mang took the electronic piano home and gave it to his 3 stepdaughters. He also invited a friend to come to his house to teach his three children to play the electronic piano.
The 3 stepdaughters looked for jobs when they became adults, and Ding Mang made a lot of efforts. With his love and sincerity, Ding Mang warmed the hearts of his mother-in-law and 3 stepdaughters, and they gradually regarded Ding Mang as a relative.

In 1982, Ding Mang's old comrade-in-arms and famous screenwriter Zou Anhe created the drama "Moonlight Dissolving" based on Ding Mang and Fan Yuyuan. After the drama was performed in Shanghai and Nanjing, it had a huge impact.
In 1983, Nanjing Film Studio adapted "Moonlight Dissolving" into a color feature film "Moon to Mid-Autumn Festival", directed by Yan Gong. The starring roles are Xia Zongxue and Yuan Mei, and Mei Ting also plays a small role in the film.

In 1999, Ding Mang's four-line poem "Arrow" published in "Poetry Magazine" was widely praised inside and outside the circle. The poem reads:
Walked a winding road
It took a hundred years to find this bow
Tonight, the arrow has been positioned at the string
Having a straight dream.
Connoisseurs believe that this poem is "as big as the century-old pursuit of national rejuvenation, and as small as the joys and sorrows of personal fate", all of which are condensed in this brilliant poem. It is equivalent to quatrains and small orders in traditional poetry, but it is a new poem that is free and easy.

In 2002, Ding Mang published the 6 million word "Ding Mang's Anthology".
It was a huge job, and Fan Yuyuan worked as an assistant to her husband. The couple forgot to sleep and eat, worked overtime, and spent two years publishing this set of books.
Ding Mang began to publish works in 1942 and wrote tens of thousands of poems in his lifetime, and his "Notes on Kuding Zhai" won the Jinling Literature Award.
Ding Mang's poetry collections "Happy Sunshine", "Cold Village", "Nostalgia", etc., are widely popular.
His prose poetry collections "Lover's Valley" and "Still Gobi" are also very popular with readers.

Although Ding Mang and Fan Yuyuan are halfway husband and wife, their relationship is better than that of the original couple. Fan Yuyuan looked up to her husband all her life and was willing to pay for him.

During the epidemic in 2020, Ding Mang's geriatric illness worsened and he was admitted to the hospital many times. Fan Yuyuan took care of her husband at home, and due to her advanced age, she was tired and sick several times.
In September 2023, Ding Mang and Fan Yuyuan were hospitalized in the hospital at the same time. Although Ding Mang is 98 years old and does not look obviously sick, his memory is seriously declining.
