On May 14, the 2024 Guangzhou "Academician Expert Campus Tour" Panyu Affiliated Middle School of Guangzhou Southern University jointly sponsored by the Guangzhou Association for Science and Technology, the Guangzhou Municipal Education Bureau, the Guangzhou Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangzhou Southern University was held.
At the lecture, Academician Tang Tao took Newton's "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy" and Fourier's "Analytical Theory of Heat" as the starting point, and expounded the important role of mathematics in modern science and technology, especially information technology, in simple terms. He pointed out that the theories established by mathematicians have greatly promoted the development of science and technology in the past century, especially in the fields of the Internet, digital communications, medical images, artificial intelligence, large-scale computing, etc., and have been widely used in modern science and technology and various fields of life.
Subsequently, the students spoke enthusiastically and asked questions based on what they had learned and the questions they were interested in. Tang Tao answered the questions one by one based on the actual study and life of the students, and encouraged the students to lay a solid foundation in mathematics, cultivate a wide range of interests and hobbies, and actively dabble in professional knowledge in other subject areas, and pay attention to interdisciplinary integration in the learning process.
Among them, in response to students' questions about the "meaning of learning mathematics", Tang Tao said that the exam is only a small part, and everyone should not gain or lose because of the results of middle school, and perseverance and really find the fun in it are much more important than the test results.
In April this year, Academician Tang Tao was officially inaugurated as the president of Guangzhou Southern University. This event was the first time he was invited to give a lecture in a middle school since he took over as the principal of Guangzhou Southern University.
In an interview with Nandu, he said that since its establishment in 2006, Guangzhou Southern University has been exploring and practicing in the reform of higher education. The university is now a doctoral workstation in Guangdong Province and a master's degree awarding project construction unit in Guangdong Province, with 11 faculties and 45 undergraduate enrollment majors, forming a discipline system with management, literature and engineering as the mainstay, economics, medicine and art with coordinated development, reasonable structure and complementary advantages. At present, there are 4 national first-class undergraduate majors, 6 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, 2 provincial key disciplines, 1 national first-class undergraduate course, 11 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 15 provincial ideological and political demonstration projects, 5 provincial high-quality resource sharing courses and 5 provincial online open courses.
