In order to form a common understanding of the grades and unite the spiritual strength of students, the Coastal Primary School of the Second Foreign Chinese School (Group) in Nanshan District, Shenzhen held a grade class activity in mid-April 2024. In this activity, three teachers, Ye Dandan, Duan Xiaoqian, and Deng Yanhua, respectively prepared carefully in combination with the goals of "friendliness, integrity, and self-discipline" of Coastal Primary School.
The grade class starts from the actual situation of students, combines students' life scenarios to guide students to experience and think, helps students understand how to get along with themselves and others in a friendly way, how to strengthen their own foundation - integrity, and how to face various temptations in life and cultivate self-discipline.
First of all, Ms. Ye Dandan from the first grade group brought a grade class with the theme of "4321 is Friendly" to the first grade students. It aims to guide students to realize that "being friends with others and being kind to others" is a good moral character, to understand the truth that "being kind to others is to be kind to oneself", and to try to start from the details of life and learning, so that the seeds of friendliness and tolerance can take root and sprout in their hearts.
At the beginning of the class, Ms. Ye introduced the children's favorite animated short videos to stimulate the children's interest and intuitively explain to the first-grade children what it means to be "friends with others" and what it means to be "kind to others". Then, Mr. Ye played the experimental videos of "Four Candles", "Three Bottles of Soda" and "Two Bottles of Coke", and inspired students to understand the truth that they should not be arrogant and arrogant when getting along with others. At the end of the class, Ms. Ye led the children to practice what they had learned in this lesson, and while facing the mirror with different expressions of "joy, anger, sadness, and happiness", the children understood what kind of attitude they would gain when they treated others. By creating real-life situations, Ms. Ye guided the students to have group discussions, which promoted the children's deeper thinking on how to practice friendliness in life.
Honesty is no trivial matter, and for children in primary school, honesty and trustworthiness are valuable qualities, and it is also a compulsory course for children. To this end, the third grade group carried out a grade class with the theme of "integrity", which was taught by the prefect Duan Xiaoqian.
"A Ph.D. student who graduated from a prestigious overseas university should have a great prospect, and everyone thinks he deserves a good job, but no one hires him. Because he had done dishonest deeds. Mr. Duan started from a piece of news and introduced the topic. Students experience the specific connotation of integrity from the story, if they lose the precious quality of honesty and trustworthiness, then even if they have excellent academic qualifications and outstanding abilities, they will not be able to become a respected and trustworthy person. In the classroom, the Year 3 children actively thought and spoke enthusiastically to state their views on the proposition of honesty and trustworthiness.
Self-discipline is the cornerstone of freedom and the only way to success. Looking at the campus, most students rely more on "other laws". In order to enable students to realize the transformation from "other discipline" to "self-discipline" and develop good study habits and behavioral habits, Ms. Deng Yanhua, the teacher of the eighth class of the fifth grade, took "self-discipline" as the theme of the class, and let all the fifth grade students have a deeper understanding of "self-discipline" through various forms such as small games, reading stories, and knowledge competitions.
Mr. Deng started with an experiment of "the temptation of marshmallows" and guided students to understand that self-discipline is to do what they don't like but should do, and not to do what they like but shouldn't do. Only by doing these two things to the extreme can we get more "marshmallows" and have a broader sky in the future. Then, Ms. Deng shared two examples of self-discipline, an Olympic champion Gu Ailing, who was able to succeed because she cultivated self-discipline since she was a child, was able to firm her goals, and was able to work hard for her goals. The other is a primary school student in Longgang District, Shenzhen, Peng Yuhan, an 8-year-old student from Shenzhen, who won the U8 women's singles national championship with her self-discipline and hard work after three years of study. In the class, Mr. Deng also led the students to find ways to improve the effect of self-discipline, and the students summarized a variety of methods such as finding external forces, taking the initiative to isolate, finding role models, and setting up reward mechanisms.
