Apple is reportedly on the verge of striking a deal where the company will use OpenAI's ChatGPT software to help power its upcoming iOS 18 iPhone AI feature.
Mark Gurman reported that Apple's agreement with OpenAI will allow Apple to announce a series of new AI features at next month's WWDC conference, including the provision of an intelligent chatbot. "It's just that the specifics of how these features work and how they are integrated are not yet known.
A previous Bloomberg report revealed that Apple is in discussions with OpenAI to use the generative AI technology behind the popular ChatGPT to power future AI features on the iPhone. The same report also suggests that Apple is in similar discussions with Google and may choose to use its Gemini chatbot technology. Now, Bloomberg has updated the reports by saying that Apple now appears to be one step away from striking a deal with OpenAI.
Apple is close to a deal, according to people familiar with the matter. It is said that the OpenAI technology may be just one part of Apple's upcoming AI push.
Previous reports have said that Apple will try to use device processing to support some of its less intensive AI features, choosing to avoid sending data to the cloud as much as possible. There are several good reasons to go this route, especially when dealing with data processing on devices can lead to a faster experience. However, performance is only part of the equation, and Apple may solve the privacy problem of data by letting users save their data on the iPhone instead of using a cloud server.
Gurman has successively reported that Apple will use its own developed in-house processors to power its AI-centric data centers. Gurman has learned from people familiar with the matter that the data center is designed to handle some of Apple's upcoming AI features, and simpler AI-related functions will run directly on the device side (powered by the processor inside the device, which has the advantage of faster response times and better privacy).
Recently, it has also been suggested that Apple will use the M2 chip in its data centers, similar to the one already used in the Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
People familiar with the matter also revealed that the revamped Siri will be unveiled at the WWDC conference in June this year. The new Siri is more conversational and versatile, and its underlying Siri technology will include a new generative AI system that supports chat features instead of answering one question at a time.
In addition to AI Siri, Bloomberg also reported that Apple's goal is to leverage large language models (LLMs) to bring a range of AI features to iOS 18, including but not limited to:

- Text-assisted text in the SMS app that processes content and autocompletes conversations.

- Incorporate generative AI in Keynote and Pages to help author content such as text and slideshows.
- The Health app will combine AI to provide personalized health and fitness recommendations.
- Bring AI capabilities to Xcode to help developers write new applications more efficiently.
