In April 1959, Zhang Wentian, as executive vice minister of foreign affairs, attended the meeting of the foreign ministers of the warsaw pact and the People's Republic of China. After the meeting, Zhang Wentian paid another foreign affairs visit, and by the time all this work was over, the time had come to June.

Zhang Wentian also received a notice from the party Central Committee that it was up to him to decide whether or not to go to Lushan to attend the meeting. Zhang Wentian also chatted with Peng Dehuai and Chen Yi, and Zhang Wentian said: It's better to go to the Central Committee meeting, and it's good to listen more.

In this way, Zhang Wentian went to attend the Lushan Conference, and the place where he lived was not far from Peng Dehuai. For this reason, Zhang Wentian often went to chat with Peng Dehuai, and the common ideas made the two of them talk very speculatively about people who were originally not close to each other.

On July 21, Zhang Wentian made a three-hour speech at the East China Group, thus getting involved in a storm. On August 20, when Zhang Wentian returned to his home in Beijing from Lushan, his wife Liu Ying was in a very heavy mood and said with some reproach: "You are doing diplomatic work, so you shouldn't speak on economic issues." ”

Zhang Wentian didn't know what his wife meant, but he still said calmly:

With so many things in your head and so many words in your heart, can you not say it? I have to talk about it...... How can economic work continue in this way, and how can the people's livelihood be achieved? I am a member of the Communist Party, and I have to tell the truth.

After the Lushan meeting, Zhang Wentian gradually left the political arena and had no work to do. For Zhang Wentian, who is indifferent to fame and fortune, he doesn't care about his position, but he can't accept it without a job.

For this reason, Zhang Wentian wrote several letters to Chairman Mao, euphemistically expressing the idea of wanting to work, but the effect was not good.

In order to work, Zhang Wentian also found other leaders of the Party Central Committee.

First of all, he found Comrade Deng Xiaoping, and Deng Xiaoping's opinion was that Zhang Wentian had engaged in diplomatic work and was familiar with international affairs, so he could study international issues. Secondly, Zhang Wentian also visited Liu Shaoqi to listen to the other party's opinions, Liu Shaoqi believes that Zhang Wentian is not suitable for international issues at this stage, and it is better to engage in the economy. In the end, Zhang Wentian found Li Fuchun, and the other party also welcomed his arrival.

However, to Zhang Wentian's pity, his idea of wanting to work in the economic field also failed, and Li Fuchun wrote to him, but he did not get permission after asking for instructions.

In 1960, Shuai Mengqi, deputy director of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, talked to Zhang Wentian and told him that the Central Committee had decided to let him serve as a special research institute of the Institute of Economic Research. Zhang Wentian was very happy when he learned the news, it was good to have a job to do, and it didn't matter what the level was.

Zhang Wentian took this job very seriously, and went to the library to borrow many books in the field of economics, and began to study economic issues. During that time, Zhang Wentian calmed down and researched, and actively participated in economic meetings, and indeed put forward many practical ideas.

In his free time at work, Zhang Wentian likes to sit alone and think about problems. Sometimes he would open the safe, take out his Lushan speech script, look at it, and say to his wife Liu Ying: "There is really nothing wrong with what I said!" ”

Faced with Zhang Wentian's doubts, Liu Ying could only comfort him that justice was at ease in the hearts of the people.

In the summer of 1961, Zhang Wentian felt very tired after participating in a series of academic activities in the field of economics for a long time, so he and his wife Liu Ying came to Qingdao to recuperate.

In the process of recuperation, Zhang Wentian never gave up thinking and reading, and wrote a lot of articles.

In 1962, Zhang Wentian attended a meeting convened by the Central Committee and was approved to go to Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang and other places to conduct investigations. After conducting an on-the-spot investigation, Zhang Wentian wrote a report on what he had seen and thought, and prepared to send it to the central authorities.

Liu Ying considered Zhang Wentian's situation and persuaded him for this, but Zhang Wentian said: "I am a member of the Communist Party, since I see the problem, the suggestion is to suggest!" ”

At the subsequent Tenth Plenary Session of the Eighth Central Committee, Zhang Wentian was once again affected, and Liu Ying was also arranged to work at the Institute of Modern History. In the years that followed, Zhang Wentian and his wife, despite their difficult situation, always believed that one day all problems would be solved.

On October 18, 1969, important leaders of the central party, government, and military were ordered to leave Beijing immediately and go to other places, and Zhang Wentian and his wife were also arranged to go to Zhaoqing, a small and medium-sized city in Guangdong.

After Zhang Wentian learned that he had three days to prepare, he immediately packed his luggage briefly, went to his bookshelf, selected his favorite books, and filled a large box in a short time.

After arriving in Zhaoqing, Zhang Wentian and his wife were arranged to live in a remote courtyard, and since then they have lived a life of "isolation from the world". During this time in Zhaoqing, Zhang Wentian and his wife did not feel sorry for themselves, but faced it with an optimistic attitude.

Liu Ying would clean up the housework every day, chat with her husband Zhang Wentian, and take a walk in the yard. In addition to talking with his wife, Zhang Wentian will also read books, reflect on problems, and write manuscripts, and every day is quite fulfilling.

Zhang Wentian and Liu Ying are in adversity, but they are also concerned about the changes in the current situation and the future and destiny of the party and the country. In March 1973, Comrade Deng Xiaoping returned to work, which made Zhang Wentian very excited.

Zhang Wentian also admired Comrade Deng Xiaoping from the bottom of his heart. In his view, when Deng Xiaoping came out to preside over the work, our party and country may have hope of getting out of the "labyrinth" as soon as possible.

In February 1974, the situation of Zhang Wentian and his wife was better, and they were able to walk around and understand the situation. Once, when Liu Ying was approved to go back to Beijing to visit relatives, he also met Comrade Wang Zhen, who also inquired about Comrade Zhang Wentian's situation, and suggested: "You can write a letter to Chairman Mao and tell me about your situation......

In this way, under the persuasion of Wang Zhen, Zhang Wentian wrote a letter to Chairman Mao, expressing his hope to return to Beijing to live and recuperate. General Wang Zhen also forwarded the letter to Chairman Mao, and Chairman Mao read it and instructed: Beijing is not suitable, you can choose a new city!

After consideration by Zhang Wentian and his wife, they decided to settle in Wuxi.

On August 23, 1975, Zhang Wentian's family left Zhaoqing and successfully arrived in Zhaoqing on the 25th, where they were arranged to live by the local organization. Compared with the previous life, Wuxi is full of tranquility and warmth.

In Wuxi, Zhang Wentian mainly sorted out and revised the manuscripts he had written after leaving Beijing, and at the same time paid attention to the situation and development at home and abroad.

1976 was undoubtedly a heavy year for Zhang Wentian. Mentally, Premier Zhou's death was a big stimulus for Zhang Wentian, and physically, Zhang Wentian was in poor health and was riddled with illness.

On July 1, the 55th anniversary of the Communist Party of China, just after 4 p.m. on that day, Zhang Wentian fell into a coma due to illness. At 7:30 a.m., Zhang Wentian's heart stopped beating.

Under the circumstances at that time, no memorial service was held for Comrade Zhang Wentian until August 25, 1979, when the Party Central Committee held a grand memorial service for Comrade Zhang Wentian, presided over by Chen Yun, and Deng Xiaoping delivered a eulogy, fully and fairly appraising his life.
