Li Zijia is eager to compete for gold in the Olympic men's singles

Malaysian badminton men's singles brother Lee Zi Jia is determined to compete for the men's singles gold medal at this year's Paris Olympics. Former All England Badminton Men's Singles champion Lee Zi Jia is the only Malaysian player to compete in the men's singles event at the Paris Olympics.

Li Zijia said the above goal in an audio clip shared on LZJ's official social media. "To be honest, I'm not arrogant, my goal is not to qualify for the Olympics, but to win," Zijia said. I knew I had the potential to win, but I realized I was still struggling with my performance. The most important thing is to qualify, which is a great encouragement for me. I don't know if I'll be able to compete in the Olympics again after this, I hope this time I'll be injury-free and compete in the best possible condition. I regret that Malaysia's No. 2 men's singles Huang Che Yong missed out on his qualification for the Paris Olympics due to injury. I don't want to put too much pressure on myself because it's a rare achievement to be in two Olympic Games, even if I haven't won a medal yet. ”

The Paris Olympics will be Zijia's second Olympic qualification. At the Tokyo Olympics, Zijia lost to China's defending champion Chen Long in three games in the men's singles round of 16.

In addition to Zi Jia, other Malaysian athletes who have qualified for the Paris Olympics include Goh Jin Wei (Women's Singles), Chia Ding Feng/So Wei Yi (Men's Doubles), Tan Kang Lok/Tina (Women's Doubles) and Tan Tong Kit/To Yi Wei (Mixed Doubles). Former world champions Chia Ting Feng and So Wei Yi won bronze at the last Tokyo Olympics, and whether they can win a medal or gold again at the Paris Olympics will also be in the spotlight for the Malaysian team.

World No. 32 Wu Jinwei qualified for the Olympics for the first time. Women's Doubles Chen Kang Lok/Tina Tina and Mixed Doubles Chen Tang Kit/Du Yiwei are also making their Olympic debuts, and the two doubles pairs are expected to compete for medals.

According to the Olympic points rankings, the BWF has announced the list of 35 players in singles and 16 pairs in doubles. The Chinese badminton team became the only team to have won a full quota (2) in all five individual events. The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11. The BWF will determine the seeding list based on the world rankings on 25 June, which will be announced on 5 July. The draw for the Olympic badminton is scheduled for July 12.
