The 2024 Great Wall Cannon Alpha pickup truck will arrive in Australian showrooms in the coming weeks and is available in three model grades: two diesel variants, Lux$51,990 and Ultra$57,990, and the top-of-the-line Ultra Hybrid $64,990: all priced at the landing price. With 3.5 tons of braking traction, the Cannon Alpha is larger than the regular Great Wall Ute as well as the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max, but smaller than the full-size American pickup trucks from Ford, Chevrolet, Ram and Toyota.

Great Wall Motor's flagship pickup truck is the first pickup truck in Australia to offer a 'full hybrid' drivetrain option, which can rely solely on electricity to power the wheels. Both the Toyota HiLux 2.8-liter diesel engine and the Ram 1500 V8 engine use mild hybrid technology, but these systems can only use an electric motor to assist the engine and cannot rely on electricity to spin the wheels without burning fuel.

It's more expensive than the standard GWM Ute, which sells for $38,990 to $52,990 for a four-wheel drive, but the base diesel model (in NSW) is cheaper than the "most affordable" 4x4 Ford Ranger XL, which lands at around $57,000 with alloy wheels and cloth seats. The diesel variant is powered by a new 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 135kW of power and 480Nm of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and torque-on-demand all-wheel drive.

According to Australian government documents, it is larger than the 120kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine in the regular small Great Wall Ute, but the Alpha is about 400 kg heavier with a tare weight of 2,432 kg. Fuel consumption is said to be 8.9 l/100 km for mixed driving, while there are Standard, Sport and Eco modes that send power to the wheels depending on the car's needs, as well as dedicated 4WD high-speed and low-speed modes.

Meanwhile, the hybrid combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and the same nine-speed automatic and 4WD system, with a combined output of 255kW and 648Nm. The hybrid is said to have a fuel consumption of 9.8L/100km. The Lux diesel has a payload of 821 kg, the Ultra diesel 760 kg and the Ultra hybrid 735 kg, while the brake towing capacity of the entire range is 3500 kg compared to 3000 kg for the regular Great Wall Ute.

Measuring 5,445 mm long, 1,991 mm wide, 1,924 mm tall and 3,350 mm wheelbase, the Cannon Alpha is 35 mm long, 57 mm wide, 38 mm high and 120 mm between the front and rear wheels than the standard Great Wall Ute Cannon.

The Ultra diesel adds a panoramic sunroof, electronic front differential lock, 14.6-inch touchscreen, heated, ventilated and massage front seats, leather seats, wireless phone charging and folding mirrors, and more.

Ultra Hybrid exclusive features include heating and ventilation, power-adjustable rear seats, head-up display, heated steering wheel, rear wireless phone charger, 10-speaker Infinity audio, ambient lighting and more.
