Side-by-side review of daily usability tests: popular joint venture compact SUVs

The compact SUV market has always been a battleground for soldiers, and it is also the main battlefield of joint venture brands, and hot-selling models such as Dongfeng Honda CR-V and Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail are all from this market segment. In order to increase sales as much as possible, luxury brands have also begun to enter this segment and lower the price threshold with the help of domestic production. For consumers, lower car prices and more models are good things, so they can have more choices when buying a car. In previous "daily utility tests", we have tested a number of popular compact SUVs, and the four comparison models selected this time are Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER, Dongfeng Honda CR-V, SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4 and Changan Lincoln Adventurer. Next, we will conduct a horizontal evaluation from the perspective of daily practicality testing to see which model has better overall performance.

  1. Comparison of in-car comfort configuration tests

In terms of interior comfort, in addition to the SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4, the middle headrest of the other three models supports height adjustment, which can effectively support the passenger's head. In comparison, the rear middle headrest of the Changan Lincoln Adventurer is larger in size, and the interior padding is thick and soft, and the comfort and support are good. The rear middle seat of SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4 is not equipped with an independent headrest, and because the backrest is integrated with the rear center armrest, the thickness is high, which has a negative impact on the ride comfort of the rear middle passengers.

In terms of the front center armrest, none of the four models supports forward and backward or up and down adjustment, and there are some congenital shortcomings. However, when the driver is seated, except for the Changan Lincoln Adventurer, the armrests of the other three models can provide effective support for the elbows, and the overall performance is satisfactory.

Among the four models, the main driver's seat of the SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4 has a forward and backward movement distance of only 230mm, which is at the middle and lower reaches of the same class of models tested. In contrast, the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER performed the best, with a front-to-back movement distance of 270mm, which is better than the average in its class. In terms of steering wheel angle adjustment, the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER performed the best, reaching 16°, which is at the upper level of the same class. In the front and rear adjustment parts of the steering wheel, the Changan Lincoln Adventurer performed the most eye-catching, reaching 70mm.

  2. USB power interface configuration test comparison

In terms of charging ports, all four models are equipped with USB ports in the front and rear rows, which can basically meet the needs of daily use. Among them, Changan Lincoln Adventurer has the largest number, reaching 5, but there is only a Type-C interface in the back row, which is single and has poor adaptability. SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4 has the best overall performance, equipped with 4 USB ports, and is equipped with Type-A and Type-C USB ports in the front and rear rows, and also has 2 12V power ports.

  3. Comparison of storage space in the car

In terms of storage space in the car, the test of the use of space in the car only focuses on the space within reach of the front row, excluding the space that needs to be opened, such as the glove box and the center armrest box. The test method is to place all the following fixed items in each storage space in the front row, and judge the performance of the vehicle's storage space by the placement of the fixed items. The fixed items selected for the test were: 2 regular-sized bottles of mineral water, 1 large-screen mobile phone, 1 lipstick, 1 satchel, 1 pair of sunglasses, 1 folding umbrella, and 1 regular-sized toilet paper.

Of the four models, the SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4 has the largest amount of storage space (excluding cup holders), bringing the total to 16. The other three models are the same, with 14 each. During the actual test, the above-mentioned fixed items can be reasonably placed in the front storage space of the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER and Dongfeng Honda CR-V. In contrast, the performance of the Changan Lincoln Adventurer needs to be optimized, and the shoulder bag and regular-sized paper are not in a suitable place.

In addition, in the cup holder test, the front and rear rows of the four models are equipped with 2 cup holders each, but only the front and rear cup holders of the Changan Lincoln Adventurer are equipped with limiters inside, and the design is quite intimate and meticulous, and it is relatively stable to place water bottles or cups. Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER also needs to be improved in terms of cup holders, and the front and rear cup holders are not equipped with limiters.

In terms of trunk space, the Dongfeng Honda CR-V and Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER both exceeded the average of their respective classes in all four tests, with the former outperforming the other three models in two of the four tests. Due to body design reasons, the SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4 performed mediocre in the four tests, and the test results did not reach the average level of the same class, and the overall performance was not as good as the other three models.

Fourth, the comparison of the interior vision test

In the safety test, we measured and compared the field of view that is most commonly used in the daily use of the vehicle. During the test, all seats in the car have been adjusted to the lowest state, and the measured data has some deviations from the driver's normal use, which is for reference only.

In the blind spot test of the forward vision, we used a 70cm high pile bucket as a reference object, and then adjusted the relative position of the vehicle until the upper edge of the bucket was visible from the main driver's seat. At this time, the distance between the front of the car and the pile barrel is measured, and the smaller the value, the smaller the blind spot in the front vision.

In the forward field of view test, the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER scored the best result at only 2.5m, which is better than the average. The other three models are not up to average, and the Cadillac XT4 is in the middle and lower reaches of its class. In the rear field of view test, the SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4 has the best test score of only 3.8m, which is far better than the average, which is directly related to its ability to equip the rearview mirror with streaming media. In contrast, the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER failed to reach the average level in its class, underperforming the other three models.

In the field of view test of the exterior mirrors, the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER performed the best, and the field of view of the exterior mirrors on both sides reached the middle and upper reaches of the same level, and the performance was remarkable. In contrast, the field of view of the left and right exterior mirrors of the Dongfeng Honda CR-V is lower than the average of its class, and the overall performance is slightly inferior.

  5. Comparison of parking assist configurations

In terms of safety configuration, referring to the experience of previous tests, the closer to 0.25m in the continuous beep phase is, the closer it is to daily use habits. In the front parking radar test, the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER and Dongfeng Honda CR-V have relatively strong detection capabilities, with a value of 0.9m. In the sustained buzzing phase, the Lincoln Adventurer performed the most prominently, with a score of 0.31m, which was closest to the test experience value. In comparison, the Dongfeng Honda CR-V's continuous beep phase distance is 0.42m, which is quite different from the test experience value. Surprisingly, the Caldecla XT4 from the luxury brand does not come with a forward parking radar.

In the rear parking radar test, the maximum detection distance of the Changan Lincoln Adventurer reached 1.86m, and the radar power was significantly better than that of the other three models. In terms of the nearest prompt distance, the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER test score is 0.25m, which is consistent with the test experience value, and the performance is remarkable.

In terms of image assistance system, in addition to the SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4, the other three models are equipped with a 360-degree panoramic image system and support multi-view display. At the same time, the parking assist line in the image can also be changed with the rotation angle of the steering wheel, which is more practical.

In daily use, the vehicle often encounters turning or U-turning, and the steering flexibility of the vehicle is very important at this time. Knowing the width of the road surface required when your car makes a U-turn in place will help you know how to avoid dangerous situations such as scraping. After actual testing, the results of the four models have reached the average level of the same class. Among them, the minimum road width of the Changan Lincoln Adventurer to make a U-turn on the spot is 9.9m, which is the best performance among the four models.

  Summary:

Although the price gap between the four compact SUVs in this issue is not small, in terms of practicality, they are basically satisfactory. As the star models of the domestic compact SUV market, the overall performance of Dongfeng Honda CR-V and Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER is relatively balanced, but there are also some areas that need to be improved. For example, there is a large gap between the performance of Dongfeng Honda's CR-V front parking radar and the test experience value, and the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER front and rear cup holders are not equipped with limiters. The SAIC-GM Cadillac XT4 and Changan Lincoln Adventurer also have some areas that need to be improved, such as the former does not provide a front parking radar, and the latter has an unreasonable design of the front storage space. In general, the overall performance of these four models has won and lost each other, and they can basically meet the needs of daily use.
