On the morning of May 11, the National College Students' Mechanical Innovation Design Competition opened in the gymnasium of Area A of Chongqing University. The theme of this year's competition is "Mechanical Innovation Promotes Agricultural Modernization, Natural Harmony Moves to a New Height of Bionics", attracting about 850 students from 186 teams from 18 colleges and universities in the city.

This year's competition requires students to design and produce small special machinery for the sowing, management and harvesting of domestic grains and 10 kinds of vegetables. or "bionic frogs" and "bionic butterflies" with the goal of improving the movement performance of bionic machinery.

Upstream News noticed at the scene that many college students set their sights on small agricultural machinery suitable for Chongqing's hilly landform.

"Tartary buckwheat is mainly cultivated in the high-altitude mountainous areas, plateaus and alpine areas of Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou and other provinces in the southwest of the mainland." Li Youwei, a member of the Chongqing University team, said that according to the team's survey results, the current agricultural machinery market for tartary buckwheat seed management equipment and facilities are far from meeting the production demand. Tartary buckwheat is mostly operated by small-scale retail households, the distribution is relatively scattered, and the terrain in southwest China is undulating, so small agricultural machinery with flexible action, lower energy consumption and lower cost is more suitable.

The team brought the entry "Tartary Buckwheat Harvesting and Threshing Integrated Automatic Harvester", a small agricultural machine that can be remotely controlled, with functions such as seedling support, harvesting, threshing, and cleaning, which can well cope with the rugged ground conditions in the southwest region.

"Peppers are grown in many places in the southwest region, but a lot of land is hilly, and the large pepper transplanting machines on the market cannot work normally, and most of them are still relying on manual transplanting." Lin Fansong, a member of the participating team of the Modern Agricultural Origin Processing Technology and Equipment R&D Center of Southwest University, introduced.

The entry brought by the team is a small and efficient pepper transplanting machine suitable for hilly terrain, which has the advantages of small size, light weight, pure electric power, etc., and the elastic seedling storage can realize the automation of the transplanting process, which can greatly facilitate farmers to plant peppers in hilly areas.

"In terms of agricultural machinery, we still have a lot of technical bottlenecks." Li Pengcheng, deputy director of the Academic Affairs Office of Chongqing University, introduced that this year's competition has formulated such a theme based on the background and needs of the times, and hopes that students can pay attention to agriculture and innovate agricultural machinery. According to reports, the winning team of this competition will enter the national finals and "compete" with college students from other provinces and cities.

The National Mechanical Innovation Design Competition for College Students is one of the national college student competition projects funded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance through the "Quality Project" for three consecutive times, and the competition system is held once every two years. Since 2002, the competition has been successfully held for 10 sessions, with a total of more than 800,000 teachers and students participating in the competition, and more than 36,000 works participating in the provincial preliminary round. The competition has become one of the important teaching links for colleges and universities across the country to cultivate college students' mechanical engineering design capabilities such as scheme design, technical design, and process realization.
