Lead " Decode the pressure muscles " of scientific exploration

Nowadays, stress and fast pace have become the key words repeatedly mentioned in today's social life, which not only poses a challenge to the emotional and psychological state of individuals, but also affects the health of people's skin to a certain extent. How to break the "involution" life from the perspective of life science and reveal the relationship between stress and skin health has become a topic of more concern in the field of life science.

Over the years, Unilever has been committed to consumer insights and scientific exploration from all dimensions. In 2022, Unilever joined hands with a number of leading Chinese partner institutions, such as Shanghai Dermatology Hospital and Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to jointly apply for an international cooperation project on human genetic resources in Chinese with the research theme of "Differences in skin phenotypes and consumer perceptions and their biological mechanisms at different stress levels" and successfully obtained an administrative license (National Science Heritage Office Review [2022] No. GH3740).

At the luncheon meeting, Unilever specially invited Professor Shi Yuling and Dr. Tan Yimei from Shanghai Dermatology Hospital, Professor Wang Sijia from Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and various partners to attend. Among them, in the academic sharing session, Unilever scientist Gu Xuelan and Wang Sijia from the Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, shared their research experience and research strategies on the background of the forward-looking research project in the field of dermatology, the multi-dimensional analysis of the impact on skin function, and the experience and thinking of the application for international cooperation projects on human genetic resources, and conducted an in-depth analysis and disclosure of the scientific findings on the effects of chronic stress and skin.

Advancing the academic development of skin health

Based on respect for the life sciences, this project groundbreaks the perspective on the effects of mental and psychological stress on the skin, and promotes scientific innovation with multidisciplinary research thinking. Through the collection of multiple biological samples, the integration of high-dimensional data such as genomics, microbiome and proteomics frequently breaks through the technical ceiling of the existing basic research of dermatology, which not only injects new vitality into the basic scientific research and application of the industry, but also strongly promotes the development of scientific research in the field of dermatology in China to a higher quality.

The project has completed the screening of more than 3,000 Chinese consumers aged 18-35 with the Perceived Stress Scale, and has carried out systematic clinical studies on the selected 200 consumers. It took four years to decode the association between stress and skin health, and skin biology. This is expected to promote the upgrading of existing skin care solutions, provide consumers with more accurate and high-quality skin health solutions, and help consumers live a better life.

Unilever's wonderful sharing at the Asian Dermatology Annual Meeting not only demonstrated its leap in scientific research and innovation, but also highlighted its deep commitment to social responsibility and consumer well-being, which not only filled the research gap on the molecular biological mechanism of the impact of mental and psychological stress on skin health, but also took a solid step in promoting scientific development and improving the quality of human life.
