A province (Swedish: län), or translated as a county, is a first-class administrative region in Sweden. Sweden was merged in 1997 and 1998 with two provinces, which are currently divided into 21 provinces and 290 municipalities (kommun), with governors appointed by the king; Provincial councils are elected by voters. Swedish provinces and municipalities are relatively independent and have no direct affiliation.
