Located at the junction of Wumeng Township and Zhongping Town in Luxun County, Luxun County, Zhongping Protection Station in Pudu River Area is the only area in Kunming with Panzhihua cycad distribution. Because Panzhihua cycads have important significance in studying flora, plant geography, paleoclimate and paleogeography, it is known as the "living fossil" of the plant kingdom and is also a national-level protected plant.
Over the years, the Zhongping Nature Reserve and the surrounding villages and towns have done their best to protect the Panzhihua cycad, where generations of Panzhihua cycad guardians have been born, who guard the green waters and green mountains here year after year.
Voluntary monitoring since the 1970s
Seeing the beautiful flowers of panzhihua cycads, Li Huzhang, director of Abu Luo Village, Wumeng Township, showed a happy smile. Li Huzhang was one of the first generation guardians of the Panzhihua cycad and has been involved in the conservation of the Panzhihua cycad since the 1970s. "The villagers in our village have been protecting cycads since the 1970s, because the number of cycads in Panzhihua has been too small since then." Li Huzhang said.

Since 1950, the number of Panzhihua cycads in the Pudu River area has been stolen and bought and sold, and the number has dropped sharply. "At that time, villagers from other villages would come to us to steal Panzhihua cycads and sell them in the market, and slowly the number of Panzhihua cycads became less and less." After the Destruction of the Panzhihua Cycad, the villagers of Abu Luo Village took spontaneous action to protect the Panzhihua Cycad. Li Huzhang introduced that the village has adopted a protection policy of "one family in one month", and each family is responsible for the supervision of cycads for one month. During the supervision period, nearly 4 hours of mountain patrol work was carried out every day to check whether the Panzhihua cycad was damaged, and if the number was reduced or damaged, it was necessary to compensate it with a responsibility system, and the villagers were always willing.
Although the work of patrolling the mountains every time is hard, it is Li Huzhang's daily motivation to go out. "Protecting Panzhihua cycads is the responsibility of each and every one of our villagers, because we don't want them to disappear in this mountain forest." From the villagers in the past to the village director today, Li Huzhang's every strand of white hair and every inch of his hand cocoon contains his dedication and love for Panzhihua Cycads. He used his own actions to arouse the awareness of generations of villagers for the protection of cycads, and also dedicated the best years to Panzhihua Cycads' only "homeland" in Kunming.
24-hour stationary sticking
"One house, one piece of land, 24 hours, one person", this is the simplest way of life of Wang Guohan, a ranger of the middle screen tube guard station. Since the establishment of the screen pipe protection station in the palanquin mountain, guarding the Panzhihua cycad has become the daily work of Wang Guohan.

After breakfast, Wang Guohan was weeding Panzhihua cycads again. In the foundation of Panzhihua cycad cultivation, Wang Guohan is strong and steady, and at his feet are countless plants of Panzhihua cycads that are being cultivated. The growth rate of Panzhihua cycads is extremely slow, and the leaf growth of each seedling takes nearly 1 to 3 years. Therefore, in the Panzhihua Cycad Cultivation Base, every step must be extremely careful. In the work of many years and months, Wang Guohan already knew the growth status and location of each Panzhihua cycad. It is better to say that Wang Guohan is the patrol of the middle screen pipe guard station than to say that Wang Guohan is the "big parent" of these Panzhihua cycads.
Wang Guohan's daily negative work is responsible for the weeding and watering of panzhihua cycads. In addition, regular artificial pollination of Panzhihua cycads is required to help increase seed yields. "The amount of watering of Panzhihua cycad is extremely exquisite, too many roots will be corroded, too little will lead to leaf death, so it must be watered extremely carefully." As a professional cycad ranger, Wang Guohan needs to be stationed at the Zhongping Guan Guard Station 24 hours a day, and the place where he lives is opposite the Panzhihua Cycad Base. In the "lonely" years of years and years, Wang Guohan told the words of the rings of the year to the Panzhihua cycad, and he sprinkled sweat on this land, and also harvested the most beautiful joy of the cycad blossoming.
Voluntary transplanting behind 3565 plants
"Protecting panzhihua cycads is the responsibility of every villager", which is the belief in the hearts of every villager in Wumeng Township and Zhongping Town. At present, the population of rare and endangered plants in the reserve has increased from 338 in 2016 to 3565 now. Since the establishment of the reserve, the Shan Zi Shan Management and Protection Bureau has successively established a national first-class protected plant Panzhihua cycad nursery base of 150 mu in the xiaohekou of Zhongping Town, which has cultivated 2265 Panzhihua cycad seedlings, and allocated 28.6 mu in the Wotang land of the Lezuo Mud Village Committee of Wumeng Township as the Panzhihua cycad display area, planting 1256 Panzhihua cycads. Many of these Panzhihua cycads are transplanted products voluntarily provided by the villagers.
"When we established the Panzhihua Cycad Zhongping Conservation Area, many villagers realized the extreme preciousness of panzhihua cycads and took the initiative to donate the Panzhihua cycads that were originally planted in front of their homes as decorations to the protection base for centralized management. On the day of the transplanting, many villagers spontaneously came to help, which was the thing I felt most moved. Li Huzhang said. In addition, due to the limited site of the base, some Panzhihua cycads still grow in the homes of villagers, and the village has also taken measures of "one tree and one protection". By signing the "Letter of Responsibility Protection" with the villagers, the growth status of Panzhihua cycads in the homes of the villagers was further implemented. Many villagers in villages such as Wumeng Township and Zhongping Town have long joined the team of guarding panzhihua cycads, practicing the protection of panzhihua cycads, and passing on the ecological concept of "green water and green mountains" to generations of villagers in the Pudu River area.
Panzhihua cycads have flowered this year, with full buds and golden colors. Behind the beautiful flowers is the persistence of the Panzhihua Cycad Forest Keepers from generation to generation. Under the protection of the Zhongping Nature Reserve and the surrounding villagers, the name of Panzhihua Cycad will be inscribed in the list of national first-class protected plants.
