Israeli Foreign Minister Katz posted on social media on the same day, condemning Petro's announcement of severing diplomatic relations with Israel, and saying that Israeli-Colombian relations would not be changed. He said that "relations between Israel and Colombia have always been good" and that Petro "cannot change that." Since the outbreak of a new round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict on 7 October last year, relations between Colombia and Israel have been highly strained. Petro has repeatedly attacked Israel and called on other Latin American countries to join Colombia in condemning Israel. At the end of October last year, Petro announced the recall of Colombia's ambassador to Israel. On 29 December last year, South Africa filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide in the Gaza Strip. On 26 January this year, the International Court of Justice issued binding "interim measures" requiring Israel to comply with the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and to prevent genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
