Far from the coast on the Yellow Sea, there is Lingshan Island, the highest island in the north, where 12 natural villages are scattered and more than 1,000 households have settled here for generations. In 1987, Lingshan Island was electrified, and the little lights in the dark night brightened up and gave hope to this beautiful island in the sea. In 1991, the power supply team on the island was established, and the power supply workers on the island gave up the convenient working and living environment outside the island to protect the light and the lifeline of the island residents in the rain, snow and ice in the storm.

Pre-holiday patrol to protect electricity safety

A cup of coffee, a reclining chair, a sunset, and a paradise of solitude...... In recent years, Lingshan Island has attracted many tourists with its unique mountain and sea resources.

Since the Qingming holiday, the island has entered the tourist season, and the business of homestay fishermen's banquet is booming. "Now that Lingshan Island tourism has entered the peak season, our work cannot be sloppy. Amid the laughter and laughter of tourists, there is such a group of people who carry thermometers and tool kits on their backs, shuttling on the winding paths of the island, seriously carrying out daily patrols and night patrols and temperature measurement work on power supply lines and transformers. They are the staff of the Lingshan Bay Power Supply Station of the State Grid Qingdao Huangdao District Power Supply Company in Lingshan Island, "Seeing tourists coming to our island, we are not to mention how happy we are, as a native of Lingshan Island, I really didn't expect our island to be so attractive." Miao Zaiwei, a member of the electrician group, told reporters.

The reporter learned that at present, there are 3 State Grid staff members on Lingshan Island, and they are affectionately called "power protection brothers" by the islanders, they are Gu Yongjun, Xiao Yonglei, and Miao Zaiwei.

On April 28, after completing the night patrol task of the 10,000-volt Chengkou line and the No. 2 station area of Chengkouzi Village, Gu Yongjun and Miao Zaiwei walked into a homestay, inspected the entrance line, indoor power lines, electrical equipment, lighting and low-voltage switches one by one, repaired the old and damaged wires and sockets in the homestay, assisted in replacing the leakage protector, and gave safe electricity guidance on the use of high-power household appliances such as induction cookers, electric steamers, and air conditioners, and carefully explained the common faults and emergency treatment methods of the equipment. "The safety of electricity is not sloppy, this 'May Day' holiday, we are on duty 24 hours a day, and we can call at any time if there is a problem. Gu Yongjun told the staff in the store.

The patrol line runs through the mountain road to eliminate hidden dangers before they occur

"The island is windy, corrosive, power supply equipment is very prone to failure, the line will often trip, because of the inconvenience of commuting, send people from the land to the island to repair, the fastest will take a day, if it is windy and rainy, the ship can not leave the port, sometimes a stop will take several days. Gu Yongjun, the leader of the electrician group on the island, said that electricity is the lifeline of the island, and if these lines are not checked often, the heart is not steady.

Gu Yongjun told reporters that the villages on the island are scattered, the points are many and wide, and most of the routes are in mountain streams, the roads are steep and rugged, and the distance between the various stations is also very large. "Especially in the middle of summer, some of the trails are covered with weeds, and the roads are very difficult to walk. "Every once in a while, they would follow the rugged, steep, narrow mountain roads, check the trail one by one, and walk up where they couldn't reach by bike.

"In the summer, each of us carries a stick with us, mainly because the island environment is good, there are more snakes and insects. Gu Yongjun said that he has been doing this work for 37 years, and during this period, there is almost no concept of holidays.

"These brothers are simply the 'living map' of the island, there is no place they don't know," the old man on the island told reporters, no matter which household electricity has a problem, they are always the first to arrive.

The electric protection brothers are bonded for the bright light of their hometown

The reporter learned that the "power protection brothers" are natives of the island, and when they grow up, like the young people on the island in the past, they yearn for the lively and colorful world on the land, and they have also had the opportunity to work outside the island, but they chose to stick to this profession, and stick to Lingshan Island, where many people were desperately going out at that time.

Talking about the reason for sticking to the island, Gu Yongjun told a story from their childhood. "When I was young, there was no electricity on the island, and my mother called her name at the door of the house as soon as it was dark, so that we could go home quickly, and our favorite thing at that time was to sit on the dock and look at the land, looking at the stars or even a piece of light, everyone felt that it was good to have light, and we could play at night, and the family would not care. Gu Yongjun recalled.

"Later, our friends liked to light a bonfire on the beach at night, everyone bent down to pick up dry firewood, wooden planks, and then ran over and threw it into the fire, and then sat around to play together, everyone said that they must live on land in the future, so that they can play together every night."

"When I grew up, I really came to land, I worked in the electricity company, and the family was very happy, and when I left the island to go to work, my father accompanied me out of the island for the first time. Gu Yongjun said that in 1987, the island was electrified, but because of the strong sea breeze and strong corrosiveness, the power supply equipment is very prone to failure, and it is very inconvenient to repair from the land to the island.

"In July 1991, the company was preparing to set up an electrician group on the island to organize the registration, I was also very entangled at first, and then recalled the dark night on the island when I was a child, I made up my mind to go back, no longer let the next generation of children live in the dark, to bring back light and electricity. "Gu Yongjun's story is very similar to the story of Miao Zaiwei and Xiao Yonglei, they said that since they chose to do this business, they have to return to the hometown where they need it most.

Monotonous work also has moments of urgency

The work on the island is monotonous and even somewhat boring. In Gu Yongjun's words, "Electricity is the lifeline of the island, and if you don't look at these lines once a day, your heart will not be steady."

In fact, their work is not so monotonous, because of the deep sea on the island, bad weather often occurs, which is a huge test for the work of ensuring power supply.

A rush repair work in the winter of 2015, Miao Zaiwei still remembers it vividly. "That day, the strong wind mixed with rain and snow swept the island, at about 10:30 in the morning, the sudden equipment failure in Nanxin Zhuangtai District led to 83 residents, 2 seawater nurseries power outages, of which Ruiping Sea Treasures Nursery is in the critical period of sea cucumber seedling growth, Xiao Yongliang, the person in charge of the nursery, is very anxious. Miao Zaiwei said, "We immediately took enough emergency repair tools and rode a motorcycle straight to the scene, and quickly determined that the fault was a cable fault of about 50 meters from the transformer to the pole, which needed to be re-laid and replaced." ”

In order to send electricity as soon as possible, they immediately carried out emergency repairs without taking a break, and the temperature of the day was more than ten degrees Celsius below zero, coupled with strong winds, rain and snow, although they were wearing cotton coats, they were still shivering from the cold.

"At about 5 o'clock in the afternoon, it was dark on the island, and many villagers watched our brothers still busy all the time, and spontaneously brought hand lamps to help illuminate, until 7 o'clock in the evening when the emergency repair was completed and the electricity was delivered, and we breathed a sigh of relief. But after not eating two meals in a row, coupled with the high intensity of work, they were already exhausted, their hands were so cold that they couldn't bend, and they had frostbite on their hands and ears.

For more than 30 years, such emergencies have been staged, but with the resident electrician team, the problem can always be solved in the shortest possible time.

"Reliable electricity" helps Lingshan Island achieve "butterfly change"

As the island's power supply becomes more and more reliable, the island has also embarked on a road of ecological revitalization, and industries such as marine aquaculture and characteristic homestays have flourished. In 2022, according to statistics, Lingshan Island's carbon emissions are far lower than carbon absorption. This work not only puts forward higher requirements for the reliability of power supply, but also brings a lot of challenges to the four brothers.

The reporter learned that Xiao Yongliang's farm was located in the northeast corner of Lingshan Island, about one kilometer away from the nearest power supply line. In April 2014, when Xiao Yongliang's nursery was preparing for construction, he found the electrician team, and after the electrician team determined the power supply plan and path on the spot, he used his motorcycle to carry cement poles to erect a low-voltage line with 11 base towers for the nursery. After solving the problem of electricity consumption, Xiao Yongliang began to concentrate on the cultivation of sea treasures.

In recent years, life on the island has completely changed, and some of the children who had worked hard outside the island have returned to the island, and they have even set up homestays to welcome tourists from all over the country to stop and watch. Before every holiday, the brothers will go to the island's characteristic homestays to assist in safety electricity inspections.

"It's completely different from before, it used to be people on the island who wanted to go out, now it's people from outside who want to come in, and the island has built street lights and turned on brightly, and the island is lively again." Gu Yongjun said that when the weather is good, standing on the opposite shore and looking in the direction of the island, you can see the island's patches of dotted lights.

"Lingshan Island is so far from the mainland, have you ever thought about leaving the island?" said Gu Yongjun, who became an electrician at the age of 17 and is now 55, on the subject. I also think about it, who doesn't have a curiosity, but the island's residents can't do without people's electricity, and if there is a problem, there are few people who can't be busy, sometimes think about the thumbs up when they see me, and feel that their efforts are worth it, as long as they can serve the residents of the island well, let them use good electricity, the outside world is the same on TV, if I have to choose again, I will choose to come back and watch their dreams."
