It is reported that ASLA is a prestigious and internationally credible organization in the field of landscape design, and annually recognizes outstanding landscape projects and professional achievements around the world. This year, the Northern California Association, an association of ASLA, has set up eight categories, including Universal Design, Parks and Public Spaces, Residential Design, Analysis and Planning, Community Impact, and Urban Design, with honorable mentions and honorable mentions. In the end, only 4 projects received honorable mentions. Among them, Pingshan Children's Park won the highest award in the park design category in 2024 - Honorable Mention, which is a high recognition of Pingshan Children's Park's nature as the theme, highly integrating ecology, education and natural play space to create a unique natural experience.

The park is in the city, the city is in the park, and the people are in the painting. Since its opening on May 31, 2022, Pingshan Children's Park has been loved by the citizens of the district, Shenzhen and even the surrounding areas, and has also created a natural, energetic and ecological play space for children.

According to the designer, in the context of China's rapid urban construction, urban residents lack a connection with nature. In Shenzhen, which has abundant residential and educational resources, most of the children's playgrounds are hard fields full of children's equipment. As the next generation, children will not be able to get in touch with nature, explore and adventure in nature, which will be a pity for social development.

Therefore, Pingshan Children's Park was born as the first children's park in Shenzhen with the theme of being close to nature. Since its establishment, the park has adhered to the concept of nature education, using unlimited open spaces to restore the natural life of mountains, forests and wilderness, attracting citizens to connect with nature in the most comfortable way, and providing children and adults of all ages with equal opportunities to enjoy urban green space.

A children's activity space nestled in the mountains

The park cleverly combines the topography and shapes the space with "big trees" as the core. The trees are connected by an overhead plank road to avoid damage to the mountain, and the underneath the trees is a place for more intimate contact between people and nature, and between the trees is an area for activity facilities.

The design team fully combined the original terrain, after many on-site reviews of the terrain and elevation difference, made up for the elevation difference through the cascade platform and air corridor, and set up skatepark, ladder, zipline, plank road and other amusement facilities by using the elevation difference, so that children can fully explore and discover in different terrain spaces.

Eco-design under the nature strategy

The park retains the original natural mountain features and the diversity of plant communities to the greatest extent. While removing the invasive species in the site, the original lychee forest is completely preserved, and the natural space for visitors to rest is sorted out through the bottom vegetation combing. Taking advantage of the natural trend of the mountains in the site, water treatment spaces such as rain gardens, wetlands, and dry streams are embedded in the park to improve the ecosystem, provide stormwater management, and integrate natural laws and ecosystem knowledge into children's education and residents' daily life. At the same time, the stone on the site was recycled and used as a construction material, continuing the vocabulary of the Stone Age.
