Recently, the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society announced the shocking results of the 2024 Global Simultaneous Census of Black-faced Spoonbills, with a total of 6,988 Black-faced Spoonbills recorded worldwide, an increase of 5.4% compared with last year.
In this remarkable survey, at least 91 black-faced spoonbills were observed in the Nansha wetland, which is an important migratory transit station and wintering resting place for migratory birds, an increase of 46.77% compared with 2022, once again setting a new record for the number of black-faced spoonbills.

In the past eight years, the average annual growth rate has been nearly 40%.
The global simultaneous survey was conducted from January 19 to 21, 2024, and the Nansha Wetland, together with birders from Dongguan, Guangzhou, Yangjiang and other places, carried out a detailed simultaneous survey in the Pearl River Estuary area.
The survey results showed that at least 91 black-faced spoonbills could be clearly identified in the Nansha wetlands, and a total of 139 white-faced spoonbills mixed with black-faced spoonbills. Although some birds could not be accurately identified due to angle and distance, this number is enough to prove the attraction of the Nansha wetlands to black-faced spoonbills.
Since 2014, black-faced spoonbills have been observed in the Nansha wetlands, and the number has increased every year. From 18 in 2016, 24 in 2017, 39 in 2018, 52 in 2020, 62 in 2022, and 91 in 2024, the average annual growth rate in 8 years has reached 38.28%.
