Taking the "Dream" ocean drill ship officially launched in Nansha in December 2023 as an example, as the first ocean drilling ship independently designed and built by the mainland, the "Dream" ocean drilling ship mainly undertakes major national scientific and technological projects and international ocean scientific drilling tasks.
The completion of the "Dream" marks a key step in the mainland's deep-sea exploration capacity building and equipment modernization.

The "Dream" ocean drilling ship has a total tonnage of about 33,000 tons, a total length of 179.8 meters, a width of 32.8 meters, a endurance of 15,000 nautical miles, a self-sustaining force of 120 days, and the stability and structural strength are designed according to the safety requirements of 16 typhoon sea conditions, and it has the ability to operate in the unlimited navigation area of the global sea area and the drilling capacity of 11,000 meters in the sea area.
In accordance with the design and construction concept of "small tonnage, multi-function and modularization", the "Dream" has broken through more than 10 key technologies, completed a number of international first designs, and its overall equipment and comprehensive operation capacity are at the international leading level.
"Ocean scientific drilling is known as the 'crown' in the field of marine science and technology, and the 'Dream' has the world's leading ocean scientific drilling capabilities, and will become a 'national important weapon' to ensure the mainland's energy security and a 'core weapon' to support the construction of a maritime power, and strongly support the mainland's implementation of the international ocean drilling science plan. Lei Yong, deputy commander of the "Dream" project department of Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, commented on the significance of the "Dream" after its completion.
Lei Yong said that with the "Dream" put into use, it will enhance the mainland's ability to "enter the deep sea, explore the deep sea and develop the deep sea", promote the construction of the mainland's maritime power, and help realize the scientific dream of global scientists to "penetrate the Moho surface and enter the upper mantle".
