From breeding to cultivation, Liu Xunhe, a professor at the School of Agronomy and Biotechnology of Southwest University and an expert in potato breeding positions in the Chongqing Potato Industry Technology System Innovation Team, has been dealing with "Jinyun Potato No. 11" for 8 years. In his opinion, this field yield measurement and appraisal is more like a "mid-term test" for him over the years.
Due to the lack of manpower, the Agricultural Life Institute of Southwest University hired many local villagers to help with the harvest. "This potato is comfortable and big!" often deals with the land, and the villagers can see the difference at a glance.
Teachers and students are recording the growth of "Jinyun Potato No. 11".
"Jinyun Potato No. 11" is full in size, has few pests and diseases, and can increase the yield by more than 29% in one season compared with the common potato varieties on the market.
According to the growth period, potatoes are divided into several categories, such as early ripening, medium ripening, and late ripening. Among them, the growth cycle of early-maturing potatoes is within 75 days, while late-maturing potatoes take more than 90 days. Because of differences in growth cycles, early and late ripening potatoes are suitable for growing in different regions.

Early-maturing varieties can be marketed earlier, have obvious price advantages, and can be planted in areas with shorter growing seasons, which are popular with farmers, especially in the south.
Potatoes are adapted to a climate that requires cool and cold temperatures. Although it can grow in hot and humid areas, it is easy to lead to the degradation of seed potatoes, which seriously affects the yield, and it is necessary to introduce new varieties from cold areas frequently.

At present, the potato planting area in Chongqing is nearly 5 million mu, and potato is the third largest crop in Chongqing, accounting for 11.2% of the total grain output.
Compared with the northern region, Chongqing has a hot climate, low altitude and less sunshine hours. Therefore, the existing potato varieties in Chongqing are mainly aimed at the middle and late maturing varieties in the middle and high altitude ecological regions of mountainous areas. In addition, due to Chongqing's special ecological environment, "plant cancers" such as late blight often break out, and farmers have to use chemical pesticides in order to control the disease, which not only increases input costs, but also may have a negative impact on the environment.

With the support of Chongqing Potato Science and Technology Enterprise Consortium, Chongqing Potato Industry Technology System Innovation Team and Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau, the potato team of Southwest University carried out the accurate identification of potato germplasm resources, pioneered the creation of potato intelligent factory hybrid germplasm combined with molecular marker-assisted selection technology, and used the shuttle breeding system of Chongqing ecology at different altitudes to select and breed a new early-maturing fresh potato variety "Jinyun Potato No. 11".

In the test field, Liu Xun went down with a hoe, and one by one the smooth and full potatoes couldn't wait to roll out, round, yellow and clear, with the smell of earth, it looked very gratifying.
At 2 o'clock in the afternoon, experts from Chongqing Municipal Agriculture and Rural Committee and other units carefully recorded the planting density, test area, tuber weight and other data of "Jinyun Potato No. 11" in Hechuan Farm, the experimental base of Southwest University, and finally measured and identified the yield of "Jinyun Potato No. 11" per mu to reach 3190.38 kg, and has the characteristics of early maturity, high yield, shade tolerance and disease resistance.

In Chongqing, the early-maturing potatoes exceeded 3 tons per mu, and the results of this "mid-term examination" made Liu Xun and his team very satisfied. Next, with the support of the Chongqing Municipal Agriculture and Rural Committee, they will carry out the promotion and planting of "Jinyun Potato No. 11" in early spring and autumn and winter, and provide technical training and guidance services, so that more growers can master the planting technology, further improve the planting efficiency of potatoes and ensure the annual supply of potatoes, and promote the leapfrog development of Chongqing's potato industry.
