"Those who know create things, those who are skillful say things and keep them, and the world is called work. All the works of the saints are also the works of saints. This is the earliest record of craftsmen in the "Examination of Gongji", the earliest technical document on handicrafts seen in China. The responsibility of "work" lies in the creation, and the "craftsman" is also the one who can work and know.
When I was a child, on the old street of Dabanqiao in Kunming, Yunnan Province, from the south to the north, there were craftsmen of all sizes, carpenters, stonemasons, baking craftsmen, geldings, bamboo carpenters, shoemakers, and coopers...... The smell of carpenter's shavings and the dust of stonemasons wafted through the air, and the squeaky of the belt in the oven's hand, the muffled hum of the piglet under the gelding's knife, and the pounding of the cooper's hammer. The bamboo strip maker on the old street is one of my cousins-in-law, who is from Sichuan and has a wonderful skill in making bamboo strips. The stout bamboo is a "million male soldier" in the hands of his cousin-in-law, and under the command of an extremely sharp knife, it is split into thick and thin slivers. His cousin-in-law's skills are second only to the gods who sprinkle beans into soldiers, and he can turn them into things, and he can make bamboo strips out of the utensils that can be seen and used at home. My mother once ordered me to buy a pot on the old street, and then go to my cousin's stall and wait for him to weave a bamboo shell for the pot pot. That thermos is still in a corner of my old house. The bamboo shell has long been pulped by the years, although it has not been used for a long time, it is still oily and red. This is my memory of craftsmen when I was a child.
