Nurhachiben was born in a noble family of Jianzhou Jurchen, and his grandfather and father were both nobles of Jianzhou Jurchen, and they were also Jianzhou Left Guard officials of the Ming Dynasty. Nurhachi has practiced horseback archery since he was a child and has a good martial arts. When he was 10 years old, his mother died, and his stepmother treated him badly. Nurhachi had to leave his family and join his local friends in the reckless forest to hunt, dig ginseng, pick pine nuts, and collect mushrooms, and then take these mountain goods to Fushun and sell them to earn a living. It was there that Nurhachi came into contact with many Han Chinese and learned the Chinese language.
The Jurchen tribes of Jianzhou always attacked each other, so the Ming garrison generals also took advantage of the contradictions between the various tribes of Jianzhou to strengthen their rule in this region. When Nurhachi was 25 years old, Nikan Wailan, the lord of Tulon City in the Jurchen Department of Jianzhou, led the Ming army to attack Atai, the lord of the Gul Walled City. Atai's wife was Nurhachi's sister, so Nurhachi's grandfather took his father to visit his granddaughter in Gulezhai, but it happened that the Ming army attacked Gulezhai, and his grandfather and father were both killed by the Ming army in the melee.
Nurhachi was so grieved that he ran to the Ming officials and said, "It was Nikan Wailan who killed my grandfather and father, and as long as you hand me over Nikan Wailan, I will be willing." However, the Ming officials only returned the bodies of his grandfather and father to him, but refused to hand over Nikan Wailan. Remembering that his strength was too small to offend the Ming army, Nurhachi returned home full of grief and indignation, and took out thirteen pairs of armor left by his father, distributed them to his soldiers, and attacked the city of Toulon. Nurhachi fought valiantly, but Nikanwailan was no match for him, and fled in disarray. Nurhachi conquered the city of Toulon and continued his pursuit, taking the opportunity to conquer some of the Jurchen tribes in Jianzhou. Nikan Wailan fled from place to place, and finally fled to Orohun (near present-day Qiqihar, Heilongjiang), where he asked for protection from the Ming army. Nurhachi also chased there. The next day, the spies sent by Jianzhou reported that the enemy soldiers were numerous, and the soldiers were a little frightened when they heard it. Nurhachi told his soldiers: "Don't be afraid, now we occupy a dangerous terrain, and although there are many enemy soldiers, they are only a rabble. If any of the leaders attack first, we will kill one or two of his leaders, and we will not fear that they will not retreat. ”
When the nine-part coalition army arrived at the foot of Gule Mountain, the Jianzhou soldiers were waiting for it on the mountain, and first sent 100 cavalry to challenge.
