Hello everyone, I'm Elder Tang, and recently a meat friend asked: What is the difference between Succulent Olivia and Marcus? Which breed is recommended for novices?

Succulent Olivia and Marcus introduced:

Olivia and Marcus are both succulent hybrids with unknown backgrounds, and they've been on the market for a long time — I raised them 10 years ago when I was in the pit, and they were still popular at the time, because most of the meat friends I knew kept them. Marcus, in particular, has reached the point of having more people like the current Ice Jade and Thrilling Fairy (which also has something to do with the lack of succulent varieties back then).

It stands to reason that after so many years, Olivia and Marcus should have faded out of the "succulent circle", but when I went to check the succulent growth recording software, I found that many meat friends have been updating the status of Olivia and Marcus recently. Quite simply, it shows that there are still a lot of meat friends who raise Olivia and Marcus!

What is the difference between Olivia and Marcus?

Olivia and Marcus are both frost-free and fleshy, and many meat lovers think they look quite similar, but as someone who has raised both breeds, I can tell you that they are significantly different in 3 ways.

The first place: the blade details are different. Olivia's leaf tip is very sharp, and the front of the leaf is very flat and waxy throughout. On the other hand, the anterior end of the Marcus leaf is relatively blunt, and its leaf surface is sometimes flat, sometimes slightly convex upward. Although the leaves of Marcus are also very smooth, I can tell that they are completely devoid of wax.

The second place: different growth habits. Olivia's early plant type is low, and it is not easy to grow, only if the maintenance time is more than 3 years, it will slowly grow piles, and more importantly, it is difficult for Olivia to become a cliff pile under normal maintenance. Marcus, on the other hand, not only grows longer stalks at the seedling stage, but also grows up if you are not careful. Of course, this also has the advantage that we can easily make it into a cliff pile.

The third place: the color of the leaves is different after the state is out. Olivia and Marcus have green leaves when they are not in state, but when Olivia is out of state, the leaves will become very red, and a lot of blood spots will be produced. As for Marcus, the leaves turn orange-red or orange-yellow when it is colored, but no one has ever seen it have blood spots. But this is not important, the important thing is that we can easily distinguish Olivia from Marcus based on the above 3 points alone.

Which one is easier to raise, Olivia and Marcus?

I've had Olivia and Marcus for many years, and from what I've observed, they're both very skinny. However, Olivia is not tolerant to high temperatures and needs proper shade in summer when temperatures exceed 35°C. Marcus, on the other hand, is more "durable", as long as the temperature does not reach more than 40 °C in summer, it can be kept outside in the open (to ensure that its potting soil is in a slightly damp state).

Does a newbie recommend raising Olivia or Marcus?

As the "starter breed" of succulents, Olivia and Marcus are both suitable for novices. However, the "budding" in the south recommends the best choice of Marcus, as for two reasons, first of all, Marcus is more sunfast, which allows us to cope with the hot weather in the south. Secondly, Olivia's resistance to bituminous coal disease is very low, if we maintain the ventilation of the environment, or if the air humidity is high in summer, then it is easy to be hit, so I personally think it will be better to raise Marcus.
